I dropped it a couple of time to see if it would separate - it didn't. Now it's soaking in water. Tomorrow, if I have time I will cut it!!! It's uncommon to find a nodule that has done that, but not unheard of. It's solid all the way through - there's nothing "binding it". I'm no expert on agate formation, but I believe that what causes this is a slip in the stone void where the agate formed. The agate is effectively a cast of the bubble it forms in and the geologic fault happened before the agate was solidified. When you cut it (if you decide to) be sure to cut perpendicular to the plane of the healed "slip" to reveal the pattern inside. Think of it as going vertically through a snowman to see what's inside each of the parts together. Do you know where it's from? Whether the eyes you see on the outside translate to colors on the inside depends a lot on that. Heat treating or other color enhancing techniques might bring the eyes out more if they aren't visible in the rind when cut.

Thanks for the input, everyone! Will cut as soon as I can because now I am really curious. Steve, thanks for the vivid mind picture of cutting the snowman in half! Now I have no doubts on which way to do it!

Yes Jim, I am happy I cut it! However a few days ago I had just cut several little nodules very similar to this one, with the little circles on the outside, so I was not surprised to find it hollow on the inside. Another one with purple crystals was a bonus!

Donnie it is beautiful!!! Are you going to wrap it? I'm kind of bound to on mine and could use some moral support! Anyway, EXCELLENT specimen and my congratulations!
