Well like any good reptile I crawl under a rock during the oppressive summer heat ! Its not getting easier
That said: I moved my parents, after retirement, up to Show Low in the 1990's I got him, Mom. & sis out of the Phoenix summers. So for a decade I had the best of both world. Talk about kicking oneself. I had an acre of tall forest pine land with abundant petrified wood. Everywhere! Not being into rocks...particularly at the time I didn't bring home one single piece when we sold the land. UUUGGHH!
But Dad had a rock hound friend, back in the day, that would visit & he collected some. On a chance occurrence, I met up with him years later, and he had pet wood collected from the property!
All said though--- and this will make many rocker cringe-- I'm a big city kind of guy. The rural life never was to my pleasing. I've lived all over the country. Big city-- small towns. Not sure why? I suppose, I'm like Socrates in this regards. Not that I particularly like people. They certainly don't like me Ha Ha
Me & the rocks are just fine in the big city...

Mostly, just drive an hour northwest and ye shall find lots of rocks! All over!! Phoenix, I would not live there, to many people but Wickenburg, only 1 hour northwest of the city and such a tiny town it is! I love it here! When I get to hot, I only have to drive 1 hour north and cool off in the mountains! At church this morning I looked to the north and saw the beautiful white peaks full of snow! Only in Arizona can it be 62 degrees and looking at snow peaks! I love it here and hope to never leave! They say that.................I am part lizard! LOL
Plus, there is collectible rock all around me! Less than an hour away in most directions! AWESOME!! Anyone coming to Arizona should give me a call!!

Well, though I am one who loves the mountains, I also love Arizona. After my mom's family lost their homestead to the depression the family drove an old truck to Arizona. They ended up in a "Hooverville" on the outskirts of Tempe. Grandpa and the boys found work as laborers, Grandma and the girls did sewing and housecleaning. They got enough of a grubstake saved up to move back to Montana, though they would go back from time to time to see the desert. My mom really grew to love the desert, and she cherished her 'Arizona Highways' magazines. We took a family trip one holiday season through Arizona twice going and coning from delivering toys and clothes to an Apache reservation in New Mexico. I remember being blown away by the Painted Desert, and it seems there is something about the desert there that still calls to me. On Christmas Day, we climbed a big mountain right near Phoenix, I think it was called Camelback Mtn, or maybe just Camel. I could not believe we were hiking in t shirts. . . That was back in 1969 and I was just a kid so might not remember as well as I think. Anyway, after seeing the kind of rocks Arizona has to offer, it is too bad for me that I have thick northern blood, I can't handle that kind of heat. I love the mountains and the crisp, cold winters, and seeing the seasons change. Arizona is at the top of our list for a vacation though. Preferably when the desert blooms in spring.

I wasn't born in Montana but I got there as fast as I could...lol. I moved there because I liked the lifestyle and the climate unlike some who move there for the scenery only then complain about the weather and how there aren't enough Starbucks or trendy places. Those are the ones who want to change everything to fit how it was where they came from and I hate that.

Anyone coming to Arizona should give me a call!! Well, Sherri. AZ is paradise, but not the ONLY paradise! My northern duck hunting colleagues always talk about how cold it is duck hunting. Well, today I got my limit of 7 ducks, in shirtsleeves while viewing the snowcapped San Bernardino Mountains. On balance tho' I'd rather be in AZ one of these days I am gonna take you up on that stone paradise with AAA materials west of Phoenix. Lunch is on me!

The west of Phoenix area holds a secret that not many know of, luck have it, I know! I would be willing to share if you pm me. You will spend a day collecting and only bring back grade AAA material! So much you won't have anywhere to put it! Good luck and PM me for some directions! Sheri In case you all don't realize it, this is one awesome gal. Before I called I assumed I was going to be calling a 50+ year old lady, turns out that she sounds like she can't be much over half that. And she is a wealth of brilliant information. Assuming I am able to make the trip, she will be getting some nice MN minerals as a reward fore her awesomeness.

Well, maybe she does, but she sure sounds like a kid. Most of the rock people are in their 50's now. Even someone in the low 40s like me is becoming a rarity. Hopefully we aren't dieing off.

She acts like a kid sometimes too...lol. Don't we all? LOL. I'm in my mid 40's so not too far from your age. Sure hope we aren't all dying off. Actually you know old rockhounds never die they petrify.

OK.
I am back from thje trip. I met Drocknut and Sheri and am glad I did.
Diane and I went out and found some rock and had a good time. Sheri was not able to come out and play, but turned me on to some great locations so it is ok too.
The truck is so loaded down that I could not have went to another location without risking breaking something. The 10,000 pounds of ice and snow I collected on the way home did not help either. I drove home through the worst of the crap you saw on the news, but I am home safe.

I am so glad that I got to meet you guys. It is so nice to know someone when you are that far from home. Especially when the people you know are a good influence on you.
Pics will come later after I have had a chance to unload and unwind.

Glad you made it back safe and sound. It was fun running around the desert with you picking up rocks. Just so you have some proof here's a few pictures I took on the Brenda adventure we took. Foxtail's truck parked near a rockhounding spot. Parked near some chrysocolla prospects near Brenda. Didn't find much in the way of cutting rough but it was fun looking. I did take a few more but photobucket is not cooperating with me right now so will have to try again later.
