Hmmm very good points and helpful thank you both .... I might try fiddling with it some more next time I go to visit my friend. So how common is pyrite that comes with no yellowish to it at all? I had never seen it so that is why I passed up that as possible. And it has been a while sense I held a magnet to pyrite. I know it is magnetic but can't remember how strong it pulls. I thought cobalt was a good fit that way. From what the wiki page said it is extra strongly magnetic. More so than iron and that is what I observed with this piece...

pyrite normally has some yellow.. its difficult to tell from your photo..it could well be cobalt, I was just adding possibilities to the equation - one possibility was that the sample was more yellow in real life that it was in the photo - obviously not!
Its easier to tell with the sample in your hand so its really down to you / friends to take suggestions, run the tests and come up with the verdict. Good luck!

Your right I know it is hard to tell from a pic ... I thank you for your input and help. Sorry if it seemed like I was being rude somehow ...that was never my intent. I have really gotten tired of trying to figure it out myself so I thought I'd try asking around. You gave me very valid possible answers. My thanks again for your time and effort...

N8, we didn't think you were rude. We thought you presented us with a challenge. I have all my adult life been identifying stuff. For decades it was reptiles and amphibians. Now it's rocks. Please let us know what you finally settle on. I am gonna bet this time cobalt is the weiner!

hahaha cool I couldn't be more happy to meet you. All my life I have been trying to identify anything that seemed mysterious..most times with little luck. The internet has helped a great deal but some things like this rock end up giving me a head ache and tired eyes. So it finally made me try asking you all. I dig the vibe here very helpful folks and very little if any judgmental types. And you are correct sir I think cobalt is the weiner! I just hope my other stones don't bore you guys.. I have been collecting sense I was a kid but I know my collection and knowledge of it is sub par compared to most I have seen here...

haha to you to there metalsmith ,I was gonna say I was thinking maybe you would have been the one who seemed just a little frustrated or something with me. Rolling your eyes after I maybe rambled on with a perhaps long winded explanation why I was pretty sure it wasn't lead... That was my reasoning for saying anything. But I have been tolled in the past I take some things to seriously and worry to much. Anyway, man pleased to meet you metalsmith. So I got a question do you practice the hobby or job of blade making and the like? I have a few things I've made that I'm fond of if you would like to swap some pic's or talk some shop that would be cool...let me know.

Hey n8hounder - the rolling eyes was a self-deprecating statement - that I'd suggested lead after you had said it was magnetic... 'hullo!' ...
I do a bit of hobbyist jewellery. Mainly making silver glow red then sticking it to my fingers with a satisfying sizzle. Of course that's not what I'm trying to do! Cooking some steel would be interesting.. Once I saw a travelling artisan who was trained in Japan making samurai swords and folding iron into carbon steel. You can see it on youtube these days but its not the same. I must have been about 16 or 17 and well into my Karate and TaeKwonDo. I told myself one day I'd bump into him again and he could let me into the 'knowledge'. Unfortunately I've not seen him again in the last 25 years! I keep looking. One day, grasshopper, one day...
Perhaps my comment of 'its really down to you / friends to take suggestions' etc sounded standoffish. I thought it might, but it wasn't meant that way - but really, it can be hard to tell just from a photo!

In all cases, your camera is focusing on what it is resting on, not the rock itself... Try holding it with just one finger, so there is nothing else for the camera to focus on!
Or, balance it somewhere, and look at the display until the focus is on the rock, and then click the shutter!
