So I just finished my first night course on how to make a cabochon and I must say it just felt right after reading all the posts here from everyone and the stickies on the subject. I probably don't need to go through a full course on this but for the club I joined it is needed to be able to use their equipment whenever I want to. next Monday is orund 2 then the third Monday I should be all set. Got a nice slab of agate from their box for free (first slab is free for all their courses, and scored a nice little chunk of pet wood too that looks like it might have been ironwood ... it has a gray surface that in areas looks like oil is on it... apparently some geologist at some time moved to the Philippines ans donated his rocks to the club, about 3/4 of a ton of material. lots of stuff there and I can't wait to dive in and make some nice cabs with it!! I will update with pics as soon as I can as well as progress as the course progresses. Thank you goes out to everyone who has ever posted cab info on here as well as those who are always there to lend moral support to the members... basically EVERYONE HERE !!! Thank You, I would not be doing this if not for the support I have received from the members of this forum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This Cabs for you !!!!

Great post! I guess, it's never a bad thing to learn a few new tricks. If you do, you can post them here and share with us.

I wish there was a club near me, but there's not. Thankfully this website exists for those of us who are not lucky enough to have a club.

Good for you, even though I have most of the equipment needed I recently joined our local club and am very happy I did. Forums are great (thanks all), utube is helpful but there is something about being there in person that helps out a lot. Our silversmithing classes start in a couple weeks, can't wait.

As an update to this post....I have since completed the required 16 cabs to be able to move on the the advanced cabbing class, and, I have been accepted into, and completed, the basic cabbing class at the other rock club I belong to, which is an hour away but they had night classes so I was able to attend!!) which allows me the chance to see how others approach making cabs which is always a good thing as I enjoy learning from many so as to increase my knowledge pool of info to draw from.
The Advanced class for cabbing in my area will be starting soon and I am excited to go!!!

Clubs are great, as for them getting one to make a few cabs before you get free range of the shop makes sense really. Clubs can have a lot of dollars worth of equipment and can't really blame them for wanting to make sure the equipment is not damaged. I jumped the same hoops with our club and learned a few thinks to boot:). One thing with our club is once you are signed off you can get the key anytime to use the shop but there must be two people. I don't need to do that as I have my own equipment, except to maybe use the 18 inch saw

Yes, books and the internet are good. Being with people is better. The guy teaching the cab 101 course is into competition cabs and has won more than a few contests so far so learning from him is very exciting!! The other teacher at the far away club is an engineer w/15 yrs experience making cabs and he knowledge has helped me to understand the more technical aspect of cabbing and he uses a different approach.

I don't need to do that as I have my own equipment, except to maybe use the 18 inch saw The purpose of making the multiple cabs was not to show knowledge of the machines, but to show you have a firm grasp on how to make basic cab shapes...ie; calibrated cabs. Once he feels you can do that on your own then he invites you to take his advanced class. he doesn't do sign ups because he wants to know you are ready to move on before he teaches you more. I am currently working with him on a shop safety/tool usage course for the club that shows proper use of saws, cab machines, torches/kilns... everything. Going to give cards out to everyone that takes the course to show they have been taught the equipment we have available to use and can use it properly.

Yes in our club the cabs need to be done well, you have to demonstrate that you can make 3 different calibrated cabs. But this will also grt you signed off so you can use the shop

there is nothing better for learning than getting wet and doing it. If you are lucky your fingernails will be a little shorter and highly polished as well! lol
