Might could get some whale wax out of your whale fossil inner ear for lapidary use, Don. Just kidding, but enjoyed reading the thread with yours and other forum members input on whale wax.

Possible discovery. While cleaning a piece of Wyoming shale, a big chip flaked off. After examining it under a loupe, and doing some minor cleaning, I think I may have found 2 tiny fish hatchlings. The longest about 1/4". Gonna do a little more cleaning and put it under the microscope.

Neat-o! Definitely see some little fishes, jakesrocks! Congrats on your discovery and hope to see microscopic shots of them soon. What were you cleaning the shale with?

Actually Jan, I was trimming the back matrix on one of my trilobites, to make it lay flat in a Riker box. I picked a tiny crack between shale layers, put my knife blade in and gave it a tap. When that flake came off, I could see a tiny bit of fossil material showing. Curiosity got the best of me, so out came the dental tools. I flaked off a tiny bit of shale and that's what I found underneath.

Couple of new fossils today. The next was the weekly freebie from my favorite seller. It's polished on one end.

Don, those are very nice! The wood is pretty!
Probably a stupid question, but are the teeth polished?
Have you ever made any cabs from fossil horse teeth? I've seen some with gemstone inlay in them that were really pretty.
Just kidding, but wondered if you checked your specimens for baby fish fossils embedded in them since I think they came from the same area as your Wyoming shale.

Never tried to cab fossil teeth of any kind, but I do have a bola cord tipped with bison incisors. I'm just looking for the right stone to finish the slide with. Possibly gem dino bone after it warms up enough to drag my saws out.

Gem dino bone sounds like it would look nice, jakesrocks! Do you have any pics of the bison incisors?

watching with interest. this is one of my favorite threads... Don what a show, you have your own museum! Not really, but I'm working on it. My goal is to have a couple of near complete skulls. Got a friend on the Pine Ridge reservation working on getting me one.
