Awesome Lowell. Nice post! If you haven't already, please put a vote in for a date. We might even weight your date choice a little heavier, if you get my drift!
My original thought was north cady's. But it sounds like 4WD only. That limits our peoples. Do we need to switch? Anybody?

Might need two trips. A 4WD No Cadys and a tamer Lavic/So Cadys. You can't really cover both areas in one weekend. I have a 4WD Jeep but only two seats but maybe some car pooling could be done if seats available.

Yeah, I'll have a spare seat.
Good Call John. Two trips. Now everyone is clear why I did not volunteer to guide!
Seems we need another poll. North Cady's or south Cady's/Lavic

Quite a few years ago I was at Wiley Well district and stopped to visit some of the Rockhound Notes/LA Rocks group. They were tent camping off the geode bed road way past the fee area but BLM had been there and asked to see their porta potty. No digging and burying per BLM there. Walk any canyon off Mule Canyon where the off roaders play and it is like walking the alleys in downtown LA. Better watch where you step. You would likely get away with no facilities but best to be prepared. I've never seen BLM at Mule Canyon, South Cadys or Lavic. Or Afton Canyon for that matter but they must collect the campground fee envelopes.

*L* Lowell, I think I know that one narrow canyon access you're talking about. Leads in to a real good geode and sagenite area. One time going in, in my old big 4X4 pickup, I got my truck hung up between the canyon walls on the steep upgrade at the entrance to the canyon. Had some of those big running board steps on the truck that stuck further outboard than I thought. Had to chip away some of the rock wall with my pick to get the truck loose *L*....Mel

Mel,
The canyon is beyond pepto hill, and is just past a place where you can turn right and head up a really steep hill that looks like a bear to navigate. It's a couple miles or so beyond the Pink hill and you cut through a small gap then descend into a wide gully before shifting right into the narrow canyon. What made it worse this last time was the sides of the canyon had dropped large boulders of rocks so even if the road was wider, you needed a shorter vehicle like a jeep to navigate through or you risked being hung up. This leads to a place I've heard called "The Dugout" where some prospector years ago dug into the side of a hill and made a room big enough for a chair and table and sleeping bag. I've never been that far back, but I want to go. Some friends dug out a large amount of gorgeous cutting material, including a multi-colored jasper with a purplish interior.
What gets me is that the place is so loaded, any road you travel down along that ridgeline is practically guaranteed to have material - and the bonus is the diversity of cutting material to be had. Unlike Lavic - jasper, or Hector Hills - oddball chalcedony/agate, Cady is a true buffet.
Wish I could have gone back there with you when you were here (well, except for the time you had to pull a gun on an approaching car in the middle of the night.......or was that somewhere else???)

Oh - as for the weekend, I have no preference at this time. I won't have one until closer to the date, but as long as it's not on Halloween, I should be okay. We host family that day.
Also, regarding where I stay. I don't camp out there, usually I drive out late friday night- catch a motel in Barstow, then boogie out before dawn to Basin Road about when the light is coming up. I start leaving the diggin areas about an hour before nightfall as it is not a short drive and you don't want to be roaming around after dark. There are no street lamps.
It would be great to be there all weekend, but I would have no room in my truck if that was the case....... Hmmmmm, sounds intriguing.

Lowell, the gun incident took place at night at Basin road and it was some guys trying too sneak into our camp on foot at night. *L*. Everyone knows it's only polite to shout howdy to the camp before you come in less yore up to no good.
The canyons I'm thinking about are a couple miles up he marked desert route past Pepto. You'd turn left just opposite one of the BLM trial markers and follow a track up a small canyon and then hit a real steep climb ( real steep) that has a tendency to high center you between canyon walls at the top. You then follow that dirt track a mile or so till you drop down into a ravine on your right. If you continue straight you go to a travertine site. There is a track there that leads to where we always camped on a small flat just the other side of a wash. You should be able to see our fire ring. From camp there are several walking paths leading roughly north towards the RR tracks. All those mountains in there are full of agate and jasper and geodes. The only real bad place in the road is going up and down that first steep climb. The rest is a piece of cake.....Mel

My vote is for the Cadys- north or south, I don't know. Lowell mentioned plumes & that's what I want. Lavic jasper doesn't sound as interesting. Lynn

Lavic jasper is so easy someone could go get some on Friday and share with everyone on saturday/sunday.
I am voting for north Cady's myself. But we also want the most friends to be involved.

This looks like it's shaping up to t be a fun trip. While I voted for the first weekend in Nov, I'm relatively flexible and will have to check on school and sports events as we get closer. I may have to hitch a ride with someone though. I think my girl (4WD) is hinting that she wants a divorce. Within the last 250 miles, I've had electrical problems, transmission problem and now the left front CV joint has decided to go. She's beginning to cost me a lot of money.

You can count JC and I in. Oh, and our two ankle biters (just kidding) Jasper and Lili as well. Jasper can snif out some great agates! I am pretty flexible on weekends so doesn't really matter to me. We will have a quad with us so can get to any area and also, our Suburban is a 4wd. We can haul several people in it. Excited to meet those of you I have not met yet and looking forward to a great time!!
PS........JC is a fantastic camp cook! How about hot dogs with onion and peppers on Sat night. We will furnish the hot dogs, onions peppers and buns, everyone else bring chips, drinks, mustard, ketsup, plates and napkins!

Seems to be shaping up nicely. Looks like we might be able to rely on Lowell for knowledge. Maybe he'll be cartographer. We have a potluck started. @<?))))>< Fish is organizing a rock swap. Lot's of votes for both polls. Hoping for an epic weekend!

Only 11 votes on dates but 16 for location. Does that mean dates is less important.

Damn, you guys & gals are killing me. You don't know how bad I want to go on just one more desert hounding trip, but there's just no way I can do it. Whoever goes, be sure to take lots of pics so I can drown myself in drool.
