I was thinking banded dolomite when I first saw it. The colors, pattern and hardness (or lack thereof) all point that direction.
Very nice, Susan! Sail, cornucopia - whatever you call it, it's beautiful!

I love the way the bands of color repeat themselves while starting at the bottom right and then working upward. This is truly a designer cab.
I was kind of hoping someone else would mention this - the curve is actually convex and not concave. (For concave remember "cave" or down.)
Either way, nice grinding and polishing!

Thanks! The rings were a total happy accident, which I have to pay more attention to in future so I can do it on purpose, since the slab wasn't cut perpindicular to the layers.
Concave is like . . .um . . . the cereal side of a bowl. Convex is like a baseball. That's what you're saying, right? The concave curve on this one is the right hand side of the sail -- it doesn't look very concave in the picture, but it's concave, I ground it almost to the radius of the 8" wheel (I could have done a better job with making the curve even). Am I misunderstanding you RocknCritter?

I'm viewing this from my phone. So if the right edge is concave I'll take your word for it. It just looks straight on this device while the banding certainly enhances the convex shape of the opposite side.

I get ya. Yeah, it's concave, it's just the picture. The rest of it is very definitely convex. ;-)
