English is not my Mother tongue so bare with me . So I wanted to share my home made flat lap. I drew inspiration from many of your awesome threads . The Flywheel is 13" ,made it out 3/4" steel plate which I machined down to 6/8" .The axis is 2" and its attached to a 5 inch pulley .The motor powering this is a 1/4 hp Leeson single phase 1750 rpm,it's some what under powered but it should get the job down .I'm still hunting for a controller board for the motor. The motor has a 3 inch pulley to reduce some rpm's and get the flywheel down to 1000 rpm .The Flywheel has some screw holes to attach a 1/2" fastening ring that am hoping on experimenting later on with wet/dry sanding paper. I ordered 12" diamond discs, grits 140/220/325 ,from Hisglassworks with magnetic backing .I made the wheel with a 1/2 arbor as I see a lot of 8" discs cheap on ebay and other sites. So hopefully in a time of need they might be a temporary substitute if I can't get the 12" ones in time, as they have a 2-3 week lead time. I couldn't find locally a Coolant Hose so I made it out of some fish tank air hose and 17 feet of 10 gauge copper wire.Fastened it to the tip of a silicone cone then to the 5/8 hose that leads to the 2000 lph (520 gph) pump . Well if you have any question please ask I'll answer them to the best of my abilities and up load more pictures . Further down are the pictures and link to a video ,Video is shaky sorry, of the machine. Admin Edit: restored photos damaged by photobucket.

Cool machine! I've always wondered how you make the tub waterproof where the shaft comes through the bottom. I bought a used machine that didn't come with a water tank so I built my own. I used small flexible copper tubing that I bought in a roll at Home Depot. I think it's used to hook up water to an ice maker. It is easy to bend to get the water to the center of the lap.

Thanks for the Copper tubing idea ,lol, its so obvious its genius . As soon as I can i'll make the switch. For the Tub what I did was cut a 2 3/4" hole then paste with Epoxy Glue a 3" coupling fitting .After the Epoxy was cured I used lots of marine grade silicone around the edges where the coupling and the tub make contact ,works like a charm . Link to coupling ( www.lowes.com/pd_23283-1814-PVC+00100++1200_0__?productId=3132705&Ntt=pvc+3+in+coupling&pl=1¤tURL=%3FNtt%3Dpvc%2B3%2Bin%2Bcoupling&facetInfo= ) As the wheel is much larger than the hole and the fitting being almost 3" tall the water would never reach the axis. Also the spinning prevents the water from getting under the wheel .Just have to make sure the water drains fast enough .If you'd like I could upload some rough sketch of what am talking about.

You don't have to make a drawing, I was just curious. Since I already have a flat lap, I don't plan to make one.

Cool. Not real fond of the deep dish style but since it's 12" might not be a problem, i'm not the 'handiest' person around lol.

No big deal at least you have the main part of the machine built. Kinda like the Star Diamond grinder I just picked up has a pan that extends up in front of the wheels I may end up cutting it off and building a whole new pan I hate restrictions.
