That is correct. I did some research on it and if I had to, I would have ordered ants for them. These ones and all of the AZ ones can eat just about any insect. During the summer I raid ant nests and feed them to the lizards. They love them more than any other food. They seemed to really like the sow bugs too. I guess the ants will go twice as far this summer with one alive.

this one was really old. Maybe even 10 years old. The old ones never adapt to captivity.

That is the one that died. He was friendly and liked being held. One day he was lively and all was good. The next day he was dead as a mackerel.
How can you tell he was old by the way?

How can you tell he was old by the way? 30 years experience with these and similar animals. It's kinda like knowing which rocks to bring home. Texture of the skin, loss of body weight (likely from stress), your description of tameness is proof of stress. Often, their response to a predator is to hold still. You have eyes and mouth large enough to seem like a predator to that specimen. It's the same as checking for fractures in slabbing rough to see which piece have the best value. How long have you had the other specimen? Which I am convinced is not an easy species to keep. I think it is a desert horned lizard. Images too foggy for surety. It does look in good condition, so good on you!

Oh, and I could tell the horned lizard was old by the grey around his muzzle... Right?

3 years is a huge success Mark K. Most die within 12 months. Next trip try to get him a girl! Keep him FAT as butter. You could get 10 years from him. Success in the world toughest to keep lizard.
