This is very helpful. thanks for posting. I've also heard that jade is heavier than you would expect for its size. Also heard that it is colder to the touch than other rocks. Someone please correct me if I am wrong! Pat, definitely true on the density. In fact Specific Gravity measurements are the best way of telling jadeite and nephrite as they are more dense than most non-metallic rocks. I have heard that people real familiar with the jade jewelry can tell fakes because they warm up in the hand faster whereas jade with high density stays cool longer.

Do like we used to do when we were kids with balloons. Charge up the rocks and see if they will stick to your head. I am sure jade will fall off unless you let the blood dry real good before you turn loose of the rock. Best if this is done while sitting because you do not want the rock to fall on your foot and injure it. (the foot, not the rock) Jim Haha, Jim, I think you rubbed the rocks up side your head a little too hard, lol. I've also heard that jade dissipates heat quickly. You can take a strand of hair and wrap it across a chunk of jade, then hit it with flame from a lighter. The hair will not burn! (Be sure you are holding it right up against the jade.) Maybe other rocks will do this too? IDK, but I know jade will, I've tried it myself.

Snowmom, I have a few pieces of jade that Jim (Wampidy) sent me. After watching Mark's rock banging videos, I had to go bang them together. They do make a different noise, but the bounciness was more noticeable to me. Come on over and bang them together sometime. Take them home and bang them on your rocks if you want to.

jugglerguy, thanks. I just got a wonderful box of Jade and jade imitators from washingtonrocks... I tried rattling two jade slices he sent me together... yes it does vibrate like crazy and I could feel the vibrations in my hand as well as hear it. so interesting. I feel like this thread and that box of rocks (thank you washingtonrocks) have really put my jade hunting forward a lot! So grateful to everybody on the forum who has helped me work through this thing and to learn, not only about the jade but answering all the questions I have had about other stuff as well. There are so many I can't name you all because I'm worried I would leave somebody out. I haven't been to college, but you all took me to school, and I am so grateful!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong! Well, you are half right. I think it is old women that are colder to the touch than a rock. I am really glad there are no women on here that are that old. It might be just an old wives tale. Men: Your first lesson on how to tell a really bad joke and save your azz in the same post. I think. Only time will tell for sure though. I think I hear my mother calling me. Bye Jim

Thanks for the barrel laugh Mark. The first time you said "doing dishes" was funny but a repeat was just too much (wiping tears from my eyes from laughing, not crying) Jim

I can not believe it Mark. Not one slap in the face or thank you for the laugh. I have always been pretty good at closing out a thread though because of some of the crazy crap that pops out of my head. I should not be held responsible though because it is automatic like autopilot. Turn on the autotype and there it is. Jim

Jim, it is obvious that you are looking for attention. I was not going to reward your behavior.
Just kidding! Thanks for the laugh. You can't help who you are.

Jim, I thought Mel's warning about using hammers was good, but it seems you didn't get it, LOL!!! I think words thrown at mature women is MUCH more reckless. They surely rebound worse than a hammer on jade! One will have to wear their social flack jacket around.
Thanks for the laughs.

This is a fun thread. With respect to heat and Jade, I have noticed that Chuckwallas and other lizards do NOT utilize Jade outcrops. I think it is because in direct sunlight they get HOTTER than surrounding rocks. In my personal experience so hot to be uncomfortable so and I had to change where I was sitting. It was only like 85o'ish outside.

You are getting to know me way way to well. Mark, I do not have a clue what you look like but I keep picturing in my mind a man standing at the sink scrubbing like hell and I get a chuckle out of it every time. Jim

I think you missed a couple of words but I think I caught your meaning. I am a total 0 when it comes to knowledge about cold blooded icky animals (not all are icky)(just the slithering, biting ones) but IMHO since the lizards are cold blooded wouldn't they be looking for the hotter rocks like the flat snakes on the blacktop? Please correct me if I am wrong because I have been wrong a couple of times in the past and have gotten over being crabby when someone tells me I am. Jim

Jim, you are making this too fun! Take your guess which is closest to my situation: Close approximation: wrong apron-> too happy ....... and waistline MUCH too high. (might explain his expression)-> Definitely not this fella. Dummy, "No Brushes on the teflon!!" -> Maybe 30 years ago , but then again I didn't do many dishes in college, ha (enjoy Jean) -> Maybe the closest I could find to true situation-> Thanks for the chuckles Jim!

Beefcake in the kitchen, I LOVE it! Thanks, Mark.
But what you probably didn't know is that he got all those bowls/dishes dirty himself. I would expect nothing less then he clean up after himself, lol.
I usually don't like to turn them loose in the kitchen, the resulting fare is generally not worth it!

My trick in college was to either 1) eat everything in a leaf of lettuce. No dishes. When that wouldn't work then 2) just quickly rinse the plate off and store it in the fridge. Doesn't cold temps kill germs?
> I usually don't like to turn them loose in the kitchen.....
Okay, we will leave that one alone

Jim Maybe up north they would need the extended heat. But in the Mojave Desert where I find jade, there is plenty of heat. I have been thinking of the info in this thread. I've also heard that jade dissipates heat quickly. You can take a strand of hair and wrap it across a chunk of jade, then hit it with flame from a lighter. The hair will not burn! (Be sure you are holding it right up against the jade.) Maybe other rocks will do this too? IDK, but I know jade will, I've tried it myself. and I can't find the one that said jade felt 'cool' to the touch. To hot to sit on in moderate weather, keeps hair from burning, and cool to the touch; seems to me like jade is a good conductor of heat.

Sucked at chemistry, too.
