The Rock Shed has them, but I buy in bulk on eBay Last thing at the bottom of the page www.therockshed.com/grit.htmlYou are leaving out coarse grit! something like 60/90 and buy more of that than anything else - like double or triple! The 1000 & polish you can easily start out with 2 pounds and go a LONG time - get more later even 1 pound of each will last you many loads - which probably means a year of more!

Good advice in here and useful to me too. I have the QT66 and was wondering if I'm alone in the problem it's given me. Out of the box, with the tumbler sitting flat, the second barrel (the one that doesn't have the screw top connected to the tumbler bracket) migrates to the other side of the tumbler and jams itself up. I have to run my QT66 with a block of wood under the outside end so that gravity forces the second barrel to stay against the first barrel. Am I the only one who has this problem?

A friend gave me 10# of course recently... knowing that I was going to get into tumbling!
Thanks for being thorough though!

I dunno Lortones Stew so I can't help ya. You might want to start a separate thread if that doesn't get answered here as your question is kinda lost here. A friend gave me 10# of course recently... knowing that I was going to get into tumbling! Ah, okay. I figured you were going with the grits that a vibe uses. Add an extra drive belt (or two!) to your order for which ever unit you buy. And store them somewhere it's not Africa hot.

Alright... qt66 with an extra 12# barrel... 5# of all the grits except the coarse... and the pellets... and shipping and I'm at $360... that should get me off to a good start right? The QT will serve me well for a long time I assume and for a small price, Im able to to big 12# loads... any objections?? I know... Im pitiful! Someone jsut tell me to push the checkout button!!!

5 pounds of 1000 or polish will last you YEARS!
What's the extra 12 lb barrel cost? - off to look give me 2 minutes
Looks great!! PUSH THE BUTTON
I don't use Lortones, so others will need to answer as to the need for back up lid gaskets, I would get an extra drive belt or two. Having the belt break in the middle of a load sucks if you don't have a spare on hand.
Did you add ceramic media like John mentioned? That's probably more useful than plastic pellets. Can also probably be found cheaper else where, but I'd get a little of each for now.

I think you'll be good to start.
To answer your earlier question about the qt66, there are probably enough times I'd opt to split a load that if I had to choose I'd go for 2 6# barrels over 1 larger, you eat a little on cost but the net benefit is worth it.
I do prefer my 15# thumler to any of my lortones, but I've collected a good number of tumblers so I can be picky.
I'd personally not invest in plastic pellets, but without a vibe you don't *really* need ceramics either. Plastix pellets are just a PITA for me, mostly because of how I clean out. I dump the barrel into a classifier on top of a 5 gallon bucket so they never get to float off, they just become more of a mess and every time I've used them I've wished I hadn't.
I do have a 6# barrel full of softer chrysocolla that needs to be polished and I think I can't do it without pellets but they've been such an irritant that I may never get to it...
Good luck!

Bumped the 1000 and Polish down to 2# each... Got the QT66 with the additional 12# barrel. Real Excited!!
So, with the Rotary... can I throw slabs in and get them polished or is that best done in a vibe? Shouldn't matter I'd guess... other than if they were too thin maybe they'd shatter/break?

I think you will be very happy with your set up. Just 24 hours ago you were trying to decide between two different vibes! You are certainly off to a better start with what you have ordered. Make sure you keep us updated and remember... we like pictures!
As to slabs, you are right in that it pretty much depends on their thickness as to whether they would survive. That and how well your load is cushioned. Try some that are expendable and learn what works. We're here for questions.
Good Luck and enjoy your new addiction
