I just joined Photobucket so I hope I get the photo on here right,,,,, Yeeeee Hawww,,,it worked! I didn't mean for the photo to come oput that big so I'm going to try to post another (smaller) photo here,,,, Oh well,,,at least I did post the photos! LOL I got tired of making bracelets, etc so I made this 1-7/8" tall x 1-7/8" wide copper cup for a change of pace. I "cooked" the copper solder on the braided wire and had some silver solder leaching but I'm SLOWLY learning a little every time I make something.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! I made a LOT of mistakes making the cup and I doubt if the average person would even notice them but they ARE there! I made a VERY basic mistake when I was soldering on the braided wires by over heating the copper solder and as much as I don't really like copper solder it was MY fault and NOT the solders! I wish copper solder came in different temps like silver solder but it doesn't so it's a matter of working with it and that's that! LOL
The copper solder is round and comes in a coil. It's very stiff and difficult to get small pieces of it to stay where I want them to because they always roll off.I got to a point where I was so frustrated with it that I decided that I either fix the problem or stop using it! I tried flattening it but it "splintered" and was useless that way. As a last resort I tried annealing the solder and after melting about 4"-6" of it I was finally able to anneal it in about 4"-5" lengths. This let me flatten it,cut it into small pallions and get it to stay where I wanted it to,,,,then I "cooked" it when I was soldering the braided wires onto the cup!Grrrrrrr! LOL Love to make something,,,,,anything where I wasn't under constant "Damage Control"! LOL connrock

Thanks again for the kind words! I got off the copper kick for a bit and now I'm doing some basic metal art out of steel. I've done quite a few pieces in steel before but this is very different in that most of these pieces are wall hung rather then something that stands on it's own. It fun,it's cheap and I enjoy doing it! connrock

Tom,,,,Although I do enjoy working with metal I'd enjoy it a LOT more if I had a 24" x 36" welding bench made of 1/2" steel plate. Right now I'm using a piece of 1/2" plate about 10" lg x 4" wide! LOL I had a great welding bench but gave it to my son years ago! I traded my welding machine for an equal amount of agate in weight! LOL
Don,,,Thanks,,,I HAD to do something different or go nuts! LOL connrock

Thanks Charlie,,, None of it is brass. It's all copper. I'm still confused with copper gauge charts but the one I have here says,,, 16 OZ 0.0216" 24 gauge
I have a roll of copper that 1-3/4" wide x 0.0216" thick and I think it was used for flashing cuz it has tar on it,,, but I'm not sure it's flashing. The roll was about 20'-30' long 35 years ago and now it's only about 5'-6' long!I gave a lot of it away to people who were just getting into doing some silver jewelery work so they could practice with it.
I would have liked to make the cup bigger,,,,more lifelike,,,,but don't have much sheet copper left so I save it for special projects. connrock

It looked like a single metal to me...but I thought I would ask anyway. I really love the flattened wire accents and I appreciate your soldering "confessions"! I like brass but it is so much harder to work with and harder to get clean afterwards. I think copper takes a better patina.
Copper has really gone up in price the last few years

Nice work. Would be fun to sip a fine bourbon from that! I have a question about copper "solder". Is there a reason why you could not just use copper wire? It is way easy to get, in a huge variety of sizes and come dead soft. Ohh.. I see. Copper solder is actually a phosphor bronze made from 7% phosphorus and 93% copper. Makes it melt slightly lower than copper and therefore woks as a solder. Sorry connrock, I answered my own question. Ignore me. Carry on.
