absolutely really the last time for the year. I wondered how rock crazy I really am yesterday and the day before. I hit two of my favorite beaches, where I had not been in a month or so. High water levels in the Lake and high winds from a couple of good storms had uncovered beach sections that probably hadn't been exposed in years. With 16-25 mph winds, good sized waves, 27 degree temps and intermittent snow showers, I was the only one out there! Hunting was fine. I used my newly opened eyes regarding meteor glass and impactites, and spent a good bit of time searching through all the granites and the limestone fossils, shales and black, brown, and green basalt. I came up with some winners, and can't wait until spring to see what the ice turns over!

The best time to rockhound is when the weather keeps everyone else away! I found that out during the Texas Summer. That first pic has got some nice ones! Yeah, you'll be back out there before Spring....

haha, The Dad_Ohs and rockroller, guys you are right. Today is the first day of rifle deer season, supposed to be clear and cold, and I will be out at the lake again, right on the shore, wearing blaze orange. Hunting for different game. My name is snowmom and I am an addict. I want to go back even later, to take pictures after it snows or while it is snowing. When the wind is up the waves there are particularly dramatic. (besides, after I take pictures, maybe the rocks won't be frozen to the ground right at water level.... )

Well, even the sand was frozen when I got there, ice covered all the rocks at the shoreline and the little bits of brush had very heavy coatings of ice and icicles. 25 degrees and snow falling. I did find some interesting stuff. The light green one in the middle right has such a silky and smooth texture, and a sort of subtle underlying pattern, probably the most appealing of the bunch. These will have to do for the winter. Can't wait til spring to see what the ice drags up onto the beach!

the M's you see on some means that a magnet will stick to that particular rock, or is at least attracted by it.

I admire snow mom's tenacity for rocks and it inspires my own. Really cool development on the meteor impact rock.

SCORE!!!! I'll bet you it that area a few more times before the hard winter hits...LOL Mike, hunting here is over. I had to pry rocks out of frozen ground and ice last time out, and now the earth is frozen at least 6 inches down. We have about 3 inches of snow on the ground, though that is supposed to turn to freezing rain over the coming week and maybe be in the mid 30's by next week. I doubt the ground will thaw until spring. That's OK, now it is time to work on the stuff I have collected and save my pennies for lapidary equipment. jugglerguy has infected me badly with the rock working fever. I have enough rocks to last my lifetime without ever going out again. I will wait now until the ice starts breaking up and receding off the shores... maybe April or so. meantime i'll get my rock fix by seeing what everybody living in the warm is finding and creating.

D............When the weather here gets crappy (mostly rainy and windy days),my wife and I just start hitting the variety stores and looking for rocks and the such... Around here a person can score on most any rock that has a place in this world...Did pretty good last winter...
