I wanted to add some snakeskin agate to my collection (just think it's kinda cool) so I did a Best Offer on eBay for a 55 pound lot. Seller accepted offer and I received a large FRB and a medium FRB full of these little treasures. Seller sent closer to 60 pounds - that's a lot of snakeskin pieces.
Pictures not so good.
Sorted through the boxes and pulled out about half to pack away.
Figured they were pretty neat so I ordered another 55 pound lot. yeah...
Again I cherry picked some keepers and boxed them up.
Well, it dawned on me that I had quite a bit of extra snakeskin agate that I would either need to deal with or be tripping over until I did.
So, I boxed the extra up in 5 of the 7x7x6 Priority Mail boxes (12 to 13 lbs per box). I spent a couple hours and divvied up the extras as best I could so each box was equal in content, then got the boxes all taped up and ready to go.
THEN I went to the USPS website and checked the shipping rates on 12 to 13 lbs in one of these Priority Mail boxes.
uh..... probably should have done that first.
$45 to 50 bucks to mail each box!
oops...
Spent the next hour cutting the tops off the square Priority Mail boxes and packing them inside medium flat rate boxes.
YES, I had considered using MFR boxes from the get go, but figured that the smaller boxes would allow more full boxes. Wasn't thinking postage.
Pretty much killed a roll of Priority Mail tape *sigh*
These "extra" pieces (60 pounds worth!) aren't the cream of the crop, but each box is very much worth having.
Got about 10 pounds of crap pieces to throw away next garbage day. No "crap" in these boxes.
Good to go (although I had a headache by now)
Bottom Line: No good deed goes unpunished. Most anything would have been more fun than all this packing stuff.
Oh yeah, I have 5 medium flat rate boxes of snakeskin agate to anyone that wants 'em.
