most people are visually oriented, a few gain more input and satisfaction from sound, some very few from smell and taste, others still fewer by touch. Jean's recent post about what makes us smile made me realize (again) that I am sound oriented. Here is a link to one of my favorite sounds.... the sound of bells. www.cccbr.org.uk/bellrecordings/introduction.php
How do you know if you are sound oriented? If somebody asks you to remember an incident from the past, do you look up, or do you look down as you try to remember? If you look up, you are visualizing the moment, if you look down you are probably listening to things your memory brings forth. If you love the printed word, love to read, you may be sound oriented, you hear the sound of the word as you read, don't you? Do you learn better if you read about something? You may be sound oriented. are there others on the board who are sound oriented? Post some of your favorite sounds here, please! I am guessing a couple of you in particular will identify as sound oriented, and will wait to see if I guessed right! thanks for looking (and listening!)

I tend to look up as I try to remember; guess I'm more visually oriented.

everybody has favorite sounds, what are some of yours? Bacon sizzling in the pan, the sound of a well tuned, powerful internal combustion engine, especially on old War Birds like the P51 Mustang. Puppies playing and discovering they can bark and howl for the first time. My absolute favorite sounds are those of the creatures of the Forrest waking up at daybreak while I'm setting in a tree waiting for supper to venture within range of an arrow. I can't think of any way to be more one with nature than patiently waiting, watching and listening to every sound in the Forrest around you. I suppose I have just enough Native American blood in my veins to be that way.

I am a sound person. Cool summer evenings of my childhood home, there was a particular mix of bug/frog/creatures that started chirping. It only happened on those perfect temperature nights by the water. To this day, I can hear the sound in my mind, but have never heard it anywhere else.

I would be more smell oriented and then visually oriented. I look up.
Favorite sounds..... white noise, baby laughing (really), cats purring, a quiet car engine, the sound my tumbler makes- woosh- woosh- (I only do jewelry so it isn't real loud), the OCEAN! (that would be number 1)
edit- I forgot- this is real specific; children playing in the yard on an early Summer day, as the muffled sounds drift through an open window with rustling curtains.

Sound of course. I'm a bit with Radio on this one, but my favorite sounds would be the bark of well tuned vintage racing engines. Not the high pitched scream of modern racing engines, but the throaty bark of the old 4 banger Offenhauser & other early engines.
The sizzle of Heli-Ark welding on stainless steel.
The thump of an artillery round killing the enemy in the distance, and the shock wave that follows.

The sizzle of a proper bead being laid down has no compare. Imagine, leather gauntlets and jacket, face shield and ear protection on, the only sound you hear is the sizzle. At that moment you can see the puddle of buttery steel forming and freezing. Nothing else exists. The world is not even a memory. Like a drug, but better.

you all are making me think of more. There is a little Steadman bi=plane that hangs out over the bay sometimes, I can hear his engine miles away if the wind is right and can hear it rev and stress as he does climbs, rolls, etc... I rush out to get a glimpse of him when I hear the sound of that motor. Likewise the sound of the C130's and Fighter jets from the nearby air base, both give me a sort of patriotic thrill when I hear them. Like no other sound on earth. We used to live near the edge of an air base when in southern il. The C-130's dropping on their approach and floating over our house were so close you could see everything printed on there, see the landing gear etc quite clearly. I felt I was so close then that it would be possible to almost reach up and touch them. They are so huge I have always marveled at how it is possible for something that massive to stay in the air.
crickets and cicadia's songs on a hot summer evening. The sound of a distant small motor boat coming into shore as dark approaches, the cry of an elk bull at dusk, loons that call as they fly over my house every morning- gone now, they are on their way south for the winter. keep the sounds coming!

I'm slowly going deaf, so when I wake up and hear any sound. I'm happy. Their was no ear protection when I started working rigs. Between the farm tractors, screaming jimmy's on the rigs and duck and geese hunting. Have played a toll on my hearing. As for smell, shotgunner might back me on this. The smell of a freshly shot shell. Spent powder. Yes I'm weird. My hunting partners thought so to. After every fly by I would grab my shells off the ground and smell them. I just told them I was being one with the gun. Plus I was a better shot them them so they could not bug me to much.

bushmanbilly, I may not be as deaf as you are but my hearing is pretty bad...those little electronic beeps from digital devices...what beeps? Use to when I worn a digital watch it would drive people crazy cause the errantly set alarm would be going off and I'd never hear it. I have to be careful about buying regular alarm clocks so that I can hear them. Talking in a group of two or more people can sometimes be a challenge...in larger groups I'm out of luck most of the time. Rattlesnakes...I have to sit probably five feet from one get it mighty mad and tilt my head a certain way before I can vaguely hear it. The biggest thing I miss, though, is hearing the birds singing.

25 years on go fast boats with huge engines has ruined mine as well. I hear cicadas 27/7/365. Some days are noisier than others. What I miss is complete silence.

I have tinnitus. All that time in a body shop. And, there were some really loud concerts.... Anyway, I have to use a sound machine at night or I can't sleep. I found the perfect one. It has 2 sounds - electric fan motors and white noise. I love it!
