I have several of these gazeteers, state by state atlas books show back roads, topo info, even old quarries. I am not in any way involved with Delorme but love their product and highly recommend them for those who like to get off the beaten path. GPS, online maps like yahoo, google and the like and some of the satellite guided products can get you into trouble or you can lose signal at any time. Its good to have a backup resource. shop.delorme.com/OA_HTML/DELibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?section=10096

I like paper maps, too. But, I also like computer ones. So far, in my short, limited rock hunting life, I've only relied on the above referenced atlas while in the field. One thing I need to do, though, is put a magnifying glass in the jeep.

I like to use the gazetteers in conjuction with google's satellite feature. Look it up on the map and zoom in for a good close look from the satellite. Amazing how much you can learn.

We consider DeLorme maps O.K., but have found Benchmark to be better. They don't cover everywhere, but all of the west. Our opinion, check them out.

I love them They have lots of detail being topo maps. They can give you a better idea of what is coming ahead of you when you are on those lonely dirt paths.
I have Montana, Utah, and Wyoming purchased for rockhounding trips a few years back. If anyone wants them, I doubt I will be using them anymore

Tom, I have the SD Delorme book around here somewhere. Doubt if I'll use it again. Something else you can try on your next SD visit is the visitors centers. They have an excellent map of the SD grasslands & black hills for just over $15.00. It's a topo map that shows all of the back roads, fire roads, trails & something that Delorme doesn't show, The boundries of all privately owned land & Indian reservations. You don't want to get caught collecting in either of those without permission.
Next time you head down here contact me in advance. I can put you in touch with someone who has access to some of the prime collecting areas on private land.

Hi Don,
That sounds like exactly the thing I want, I did get a map from the rangers in Wall, he marked several spots for me. I never found anything for sale but I will try the visitors centers for sure next year. Thanks for the kind offer I will definitely give you a shout when I am coming back in June or July. I love South Dakota, I just cant wait:) I would love to try some private land, thanks a lot.

My filing system is terrible.

Boy, if it had been a snake it would have bit me. The Delorme map book was sitting right beside me, buried under a pile of rock books & stuff. Now if only finding the other map were that easy. LOL

Great link, thanks!! I JUST bought the map book for SK, it will be very handy even with all the electronic gadgets. It will reside in my FJ Cruiser rock hunting machine. First crossing Indian Creek SD 2015. Did I mention I love South Dakota!

Hi Don,
If you wish to part with it I would be happy to buy it from you. I have a friend who has a US post box, I am sure he would let you ship it to him and he can send it to me. I buy stuff from him all the time, but I don't like to call in to many favors because then I won't have a friend with a US postal box LOL.
Thanks
Tom

Hey Tom,
If I can find the map, you can have them both for the cost of postage. I'm too damned old to be packing loads of rocks out of the back country. I won't be needing them any more.

That's very generous of you Don. I will gladly pay the postage. Maybe when we come down next summer I could interest you in lunch? Or a trip in my truck somewhere we don't have to haul rocks:). Or both!

LOL, thanks for the invite, but I live 6 - 1/2 hours away from the Black Hills. I'm up in the north east corner of the state.
