Oh yeah, the Northern Tool comes with a 7" blade, has a 5/8" arbor, and the motor is stated as 2/3hp. The motor power...in this range of a saw, it seems that I should go for all the hp/amps that I can get...the NT one falling at the bottom of the range should I keep on looking? I figure the saw will bog down quicker with a lighter motor... Looking at the revered WF it appears to have had a 3/4hp motor so the NT saw would be a little anemic in comparison.....

What do you want the saw to do?
Is this a forever purchase or something to tide you over until you find better or figure out if this rock thing is going to hold your interest?
I think you are overthinking something at this price level.
Personally, I'd go with a pawn shop buy and continue to watch for better to fall in your lap if the desire remains.

Bob, I figure the most I'll be able to attain is doing cabs. Slabbing is simply out of my range and I don't have the rock for it either. My rocks, at the most will probably be around two inches thick...I don't foresee myself getting to places with really large specimen-type rocks. If I could find a nice trim saw that would saw ~2" rock that would probably be where I'd end up at (at least 'til I find that giant unknown vein of gold-laced Alabama Picture Agate behind the house. ). A tile saw is probably a "bridge" between "am I going to keep doing this" and a regular rock saw of some kind. All my rambling...I think it's just a personal distraction from my day-to-day life at the moment. You're right, I'm overthinking it...thanks for the reality check.

I'm all for rambling! I just wasn't sure what you needed a saw for. You have a cab machine I don't know about?
I thought it was just for trimming the rough spots off rocks to be tumbled. Most any tile saw can handle that task. And, most tiles saws can handle cutting slabs to make cabs.
Cheap saw, decent blade and you're cutting. As you said, you're not going to be slabbing football sized chunks of agate anytime soon.
Looking forward to seeing that gold-laced Alabama Picture Agate!
Ramble on ~

Bob, it just came to me a few minutes ago...what *do* I really need a saw for? It suddenly dawned on my that if I cut little slabs of rocks what would I do with them. I think something like the Rock Rascal combo might could work with a lot of wheel/pad changes 9or whatever). But, simply getting a tile saw to cut miniature slabs...seems kinda fruitless. Ah well, it was a distraction I suppose.

Love the rambling. I do a lot of the same overthinking back-and-forth...and also easily lose track of my purpose!

Well, there was a Rock Rascal on eBay that I bid on....apparently got sniped in the last minute. Somebody got a good deal (I think)...anybody here get it? Ah well, maybe I just need a hacksaw...that'd keep me busy for a while!

Question... This is probably really simple, but...I'm simple-minded so it works out. I'm interesting in cutting 1" to 2" diameter rocks...will a 7" tile saw work?....a 6" trim saw? Most of what I see in 7" tile saws state 1" to 1-1/4" depth of cut. Is this because of the blade shield attachment at the back of the blade only clearing this height or is it simply because there's only that much of the blade exposed above the table? Ed, I'm almost half-way through my first rock now with the hacksaw...my right arm is twice as big as my left one now.

I think the rule of thumb is that a blade will cut a rock 3/8 ths the blade diameter.

That sounds good. Calculating things at 3/8" of blade diameter: A 7" blade would cut 2.625" depth. A 6" blade would cut 2.25" depth. Sound about right? I'm thinking it's the tile saw's blade shield mount that hinders the specs for them. ETA: Oh, and thanks for the quick feedback Pat!!!!!!!!!!!
