A jewelry saw is cheap.

Got the saw and a couple dozen blades. I have used a bench pin a long time ago at the rock club. You jogged my memory, thanks. I'll see if there are plans to make one since I did not order one. Chuck

I cut out with scissors, double-sided-tape it down, and trace the outline with a sharpie. I've been thinking about using sticker paper as well, or using a scribe to score the copper.

I would rather scribe the line, too. I tried it and had a hard time seeing it, though. I'll probably try it again sometime and see if I have better luck.

Sticker paper is ok but can gum up the saw a bit. You tube acetone transfer Chuck, I think that method is pretty simple and I believe it uses any laser printer toner. You will have to research this as I am going from memory. That's not a real good thing at my age LOL

Chuck I looked it up un YouTube. Basically print your pattern in reverse image on a laser. Cut it out wipe copper or other metal with acetone to clean. Put paper ink Sid down and tape in place. Gently rub a acetone dampened sponge or cloth or paint it onto the back of the paper. Then remove paper and cut out pattern. Looks very durable and maybe my memory is better than I though:). It's just that easy and as you are a cad pro you will be great at it.

"I do things very calibrated in general." Damn engineers Mercy, with a 9 character alphanumeric drawing 'designation'. I think I'm getting sick. Maybe a lesson in freelance for Mr. Chuck. rockjunquie, go up there and wrestle him. Calibrated pile of James' bezels

My other personality is neat and structured. Oddly it is the personality that gets ridiculed. Rigid/structured and unchangeable LOL. I don't remember anyone complaining about your workmanship. I used to turn the next desk over engineer's book at a 45 degree angle when he was away. Upon return he hastily put it back in line 90 degrees w/everything else on his desk. The other engineers grinning. We had to love him. Tumbling that metal in bulk did remove the burs. Saved a lot of edge sanding.

I certainly admire all of the freeform cabs I see here and keep thinking I need to go in that direction but it has been four years now and I have not ventured over to the dark side yet. Been going at this stuff hardcore for awhile and seeing all the stuff posted here reminds me I have just chipped at the surface of the possibilities. Chuck

Two extremes of creativity, structured and freelance. Structured guy going free style can produce phenomenal creations. Not many occupations force the creative mind lobe like that of an engineer on serious scale projects. Probably good for the bones. Engineering school forced us to take two art classes to expand horizons and stray from structure. They were prerequisite classes, no degree without them. We hated those classes at first, then got into them as the class proceeded. Darn art teachers were very understanding and treated us as if we were special ed Ha. At least those classes had gals.

You have a good eye Chuck, freeform should be a breeze for you. Dop up a scrap & start grinding on it. The rock will tell you how it wants to be shaped. Rock nirvana is closer than you think!

Super cool Chuck! What program do you use? My boyfriend's a mechE and has solidworks. rockjunquie - there's Flickr and Imgur... I had been using my own domain, but for some reason I can't get my ftp program working, either. I can get to my site no prob, but filezilla can't reach my files. I stopped using Filezilla a few years back (probably close to 5 years?) and use a program called WinSCP now. It does basically the same stuff as FileZilla but also works well with SCP on Linux machines and can even send other commands (FileZilla may do this, too but WinSCP has become very reliable) - are you on Windows or Mac? If Windows you might give WinSCP a shot, just make sure to select "FTP" from the connection options. PM me if you want any help on that stuff.

I found a plug in for firefox called fireftp that works great and gives me the image url. That's so handy!

Chuck, you must recognize that you are already very artistic- look at all the different things you've been doing with great success! I don't see any problem with being engineer minded or exacting. My brother in law is a quantum physics engineer at the Jefferson Lab particle accelerator and he is very artistic! Go with your strengths and don't second guess that creative voice.
I don't do a lot of freeforms, either. I like to make my own templates. Wish I knew CAD, I would use it!

rockjunquie, there's a free CAD program offered by Autodesk. I haven't used it but my boyfriend has. It's serviceable (and free!)

A person's inspiration is a powerful force. Path less important. Some of the finest art work is created with the most primitive methods and materials.
Another person's work is a great source of inspiration and creation.
