James, you got me to thinking. There is a large bentonite mining and refining plant (American Colloid Company) about thirty miles north of me. I used to deliver tires there and in wet conditions you could slide (on your feet) for ten feet before stopping...you had to be very careful walking around...*very* slick stuff! It's got lots of uses, drilling mud, pond linings, metal casting, herbal treats(?), etc.,. 'Reckon it'd be worth trying? BentoniteUnless those roads can be proved to be vital for public passage from "Point A to Point B" when those private properties are gobbled up the roads will be shut down. Counties love to give up roads so they don't have to maintain them. But, hopefully there's too many folks like Cousin Jeb with the handicapped sign and the drive-thru mason jar business who ain't going no where. That's the one-colloidal clay. Darn right it will work. Also called platelet clay. It is about all the same, worn down Appalachian mountain quartz and felspar.

Intheswamp , rockpickerforever says mud wrestling is a woman's sport. How many men in the bar would jump in the mud with those gals ? Us mens wish.... Thunder69 /Ed Ole Jean may whoop me and ruin my reputation. It would be a distinct possibility, but I'm sure you wouldn't mind, James! Ha ha, you can say that again!

James, thanks for the feedback on the bentonite. If I get a chance I might drop in and see if I can get a couple of buckets full. Seems there was security there, but could hike in the back way...don't want to tote 5-gallon buckets of that stuff, though. Maybe a few guys I used to know still work there.

Love tumbling in our clay. Give it a try sometime.

rockpickerforever would make a fine Alabama mud wrestler. That white clay is kinda incredible. A 1/4 inch ball can stain a 100 foot driveway. The red stuff no match for the white in messiness standpoint.

Both seem equal in texture and when screened the white is pretty much red. The local use for it is to mix with cement in a pug mill and incase pipelines in it before covering back up. In Oklahoma I had a misunderstanding with the southern drawl. The good ole boy said what I needed was "red salick". So I wrote in my report I had found red clay named "red slick". Well 2 years later I found I was processing "red select".

To convert southern to english. www.rinkworks.com/dialect/For example, converting your english post above to southern by copy and pasting in the Dialecticizer: One pit ah wawk in down in Hoeston th' clay is Red wif White blotches. ah wonner eff'n this hyar is th' same. Both seem equal in texture an' when screened th' white is purdy much red, cuss it all t' tarnation. Th' local use fo' it is t'mix wif cement in a pug mill an' incase pipelines in it befo'e covahin' back up. In Oklahoma ah had a misunnerstan'in' wif th' southern drawl, ah reckon. Th' fine ole fella said whut ah needed was "red salick". So ah wrote in mah repo't ah had foun' red clay named "red slick". Wal 2 years later ah foun' ah was processin' "red seleck

"Holy wah the kala mojaca is over the rim aye gotta go dare now!"
Translates to "really wow the fish head soup is boiling over and I have to go"

When that white clay dries it is slick like talcum powder. Very very fine. If you rub it on your fingers when it is dry it leaves a shiny white film. When wet and completely turned into slurry it is really smooth and slick. The red clay from this mine has the same sand less texture but 1-8% iron oxide I believe. The clay you received is probably 40% quartz sand. It is the sand that is less skin friendly. Red clay a permanent stain guaranteed on clothing but easily washes off skin. Probably couldn't convince you of that. Before they started replanting those pits with pine trees you could see wild colors for miles.

Well the slang is Upper Michigan and northern MN , yooper and rangers (iron range) Kalamojakka (pronounce kala moy a ca) is slang from some of the Finlanders that made this home. If you have seen the movie fargo they are not so far off with their accents.

toiv0 interesting. Finlanders, that may explain that. Will dial in on Fargo. Worked with Swedes and Norwegians and must say they have a language to their own. They picked on each other like Alabama and Georgia folks do. Both had sideways comments about Finns. Interesting people. Company sent me over there on business. Sauna with vodka and dinner. Step out and bust a hole in the ice covered hotel pool and in we went. Stark naked in the wide open. Hearty folks.
