Assuming that 8ozs is the correct amount of stones/rocks for my tumbler, approximately how much grit should I use? And if after a week I need to carry on at the first stage, should I add more grit and maybe a little water, or should I change to a complete new mixture. If it's change, should I wash or just empty the old stuff. Sorry for all the questions. I suppose really I should be experimenting.

Personally, I would leave the scale on the shelf and just have fun. Fill with rock mixture to 2/3 full and add filler (small gravel or ceramic) to 3/4 full. Grit about 1 tablespoon per lb. barrel capacity. If tumbler won't start with that load use lighter filler and more of it. Water as discussed. Run 7-10 days. If like most you can't wait that long without peaking check after three days. If a good thick slurry is forming let it roll for rest of week. If slurry like water add a little more grit. At end of first run you can add more grit or rinse and start new run. Really depends on how things are progressing. It sounds like a very small tumbler so I would probably rinse and start fresh. Other option is to pour off some slurry if grit completely broken down, add new grit and a little water. Really not rocket science and after several batches you will have your own variation. I think best to follow established instructions for first few loads to gain confidence and then start trying the unlimited variations people use successfully.

Welcome to the forum. Hope you have a great experience with everyone here. I live in Utah, and have a good size collection myself, but The cool thing about joining is getting involved in traveling Boxes, trips, and rock exchanges.
