I killed my PB account out of spite. I was looking thru some of my old posts and thought this one would be a good one to repost the pictures. I saw a few people asking about tumbling obsidian recently so I'm also bumping this hoping it helps with their progress!

ChicagoDave am glad that you started fixing the pictures on this one. Awesome shine on a difficult materials and the tips that orrum gave were super helpful. Doubling on the ceramic and will use the hated smalls too.. groan.. Imagine what Bill could do with two legs. Lot more ceramic than I imagined. Get some of those bruises and maybe I can get past that now. Not hoping to do them like you do but better than am doing now. Course I throw them in with a lot of harder agates and know better but don't do better. . Miss seeing all your really cool tumbles..

Thanks for fixing this one ChicagoDave. I'll be going against the (vibe) grain and see what I can get out of a complete rotary tumble. I know what the general opinion is, but I'll give it a go anyhow. It may be a month or so before I'm ready, as I have both barrels on my QT-66 filled with mixed rocks, and that needs to dwindle down to one to free the other one. Plus, I have some obsidian to reduce first. This has been very enlightening. Oh, almost forgot. Did you find much of a gas buildup in the beginning of your coarse stage? Dave

Here is my Standard "recipe" 46/70 (or 60/90) SiC in my QT-66. Weekly clean outs. Pulled rocks when ready. 2 tablespoons 120/220 SiC for 2 days in Lot-O 1/2 teaspoon 500 AO + 1 tablespoon Borax for 2 days in Lot-O 1/2 teaspoon 1000 AO + 1 tablespoon Borax for 2 days in Lot-O 1/2 teaspoon Polish + 1 tablespoon Borax for 2 days in Lot-O 2 tablespoons Borax as a final burnish for 5 hours in Lot-O
I did not notice any gas buildup with this material.

Thank you Dave. The outcome was beautiful! (... and your post very timely!) I have a full load of Mahogany Obsidian presently tumbling for the last 2-days QT-66 with 80 grit and a cup of kitty litter and small ceramics. This thread will help guide me. I did not know about gassing problems... so I will check the load today.
I was under the impression that the vibe was to violent for Obsidian. Looking at your results proves that wrong. (I do not have a Lot-O, but do have a UV-10.)
Thanks again for posting this thread.

Vibe tumbling Cliff is about the same recipe for everyone....however each person tweaks it best to fit there system. I personally add a little 1000 grit to my teaspoon of 500 grit. Then I add a little AO polish to my 1000 grit.
