Did you tumble a piece of Hell's Canyon?? Your pictures are simply divine. It's true. I just sold all my gear. Gave the proceeds to charity.

@shotgunner, my rock hobby has rekindled the photography spark. I make time for both of them as therapy from the stress of the day. Try to carve out some time for yourself and get that camera in your hand. I give up sleep in order to take on all my extracurricular activities.

Truthfully, I'm settling into and trying to normalise life around my new position. And I have a new (7 months) GF. Fortunately it's football season and I have Sundays off. Will be back to lapidary this Sunday! But I ain't going to bed late. Ever. Lol

Awesome. Pro quality. Calendars and screen savers, wall art. One load of tumbles supply thousands of photos. Nature generous.

My new macro lens has got me looking over all my tumbles for interesting patterns to isolate in abstract photos. Talk about endless possibilities. Mother Nature is the true artist, I reckon.
Ready-made art waiting to be captured...
Definitely true. Absolutely amazing work!

Beautiful shots! I do love some good macro photography! Edit: I had to jump over to my laptop so I could look at those pictures on a bigger screen and also go back to look at the other photos you posted. Those are all incredible, Randy! You did a fantastic job capturing the patterns. The Hell's Canyon is phenomenal and I love seeing those red speckles in your latest batch of photos, too.

Oops, left out one of my favorites. I know where THAT came from. I'm still amazed that it's Lavic, and I still hope that another one pops up in my bucket. Nice to see you back.

Some of these may have been posted before, but since I have a 'macro' thread, I may as well put these here.
Tell me about your lighting, please. Or, if it's not too much of a hassle, maybe you could post a photo of your camera / tripod / lighting setup? If you have already discussed in another thread, just point in that direction. Also, feel free to answer any of these questions if you've got time. Do you use a focusing rail? Or just a tripod? Can't imagine these are hand held. Manual f stop / shutter speed mode? Up around f10 or f11? Lowest ISO available on your camera, I assume? Custom contrast / saturation / sharpness settings in camera? Shot raw and post-processed, or do you let the camera process them? I have a few Canon DSLRs, including whatever the semi-pro full frame version was that came out around 3-4 years ago, 5D Mark IV, I think, and a few oldie-but-goodie crop frame models. The best photographs I have taken were done 15+ years ago on the original Canon digital rebel with cheap canon prime lenses. Good subject matter / composition / lighting and a sharp lens is all you need for great photos from any Canon DSLR make in the past 20 years. Performance (auto-focus speed, for example) has improved a lot on newer models, but unless you're taking 100% crops and blowing them up for wall art, any Canon DSRL made in the past 20 years takes great photos. And I've got a couple of older Canon prime macro lenses, including a 180mm f3.5 insect lens (the 180mm focal length lets you focus in on little critters without getting 1/2" from their face and scaring them off). Holding a 180mm lens steady when stopped down to f9-f16 is the only problem out in the field... A powerful flash helps. I want to set up a little rock photo studio using my neglected photo equipment. Shouldn't be a big deal, but lighting is the one issue I'm not sure about. You manage good illumination without glare. I am interested in how you achieve that with such highly polished rocks.

Shouldn't be a big deal, but lighting is the one issue I'm not sure about. You manage good illumination without glare. I am interested in how you achieve that with such highly polished rocks. Jonathan, first let me say, I love your profile pic. I was looking through old posts and came across your thread that had the cat investigating the rock. Nice shot. I am a little short on time right now, have to clear some snow and ice, but I will direct you to a thread where I discussed my lighting setup and backgrounds a little bit. The discussion on photography starts on the second page of the November tumbles thread. One other unusual background that I get a kick out of:
Makes for a nice 'clean' surface.
See if that can hold you over for a little bit and I'll get back on later to answer some of your other questions. You should be able to click on any of my images in the post and go straight to that image on my Flickr page. You can look at the EXIF data for any photo and see my camera, lens, ISO, aperture, etc. You can gather a lot of info there and see if that helps, or creates new questions.

Could make a sci-fi game world map out of that 3rd pic; great stuff!
