Some things are sweeter the second time around. I had a chance to buy this rifle a couple weeks ago, but just couldn't justify the outlay, although it was a heck of a bargain! I ultimately passed and a good friend of mine bought it. Turns out the stock was too long for him and he could barely reach the trigger. They didn't call them "Long rifles" for nothing! :-) I have Orangutan style, knuckle dragger arms attached to my 6'4" frame, so it fit me perfectly! I had already taken a custom order from him for a Turquoise pendant and matching earrings for his wife for Christmas, so he said we could barter that amount against the cost of the rifle leaving me with a modest amount to come up with in cash. He delivered the rifle to me yesterday and his wife would have no waiting for her jewelry, so she put them on then and there! I swear the woman had tears in her eyes she liked them so much! He also brought me a box of goodies for the rifle including .50 caliber round balls, a pound of premium Swiss black powder, a killer powder horn, a bullet mold, patches and a host of cleaning and maintenance tools! I planned to shoot it this afternoon and almost shed a tear when I walked out in the shop and saw it was raining Oh well, maybe tomorrow

Will be listening for that first shot. She's a beauty Arlen. Might wear your shooting jacket, that small hard butt can speak to your shoulder.

What a beauty! Stunning wood. Hoping for a full view picture and a shooting report in the near future.

Thanks guys. She was made by Matt Avance of Tennessee Valley Muzzleloading, so she has a good pedigree. I know I will have trouble seeing the rear sight with bad eyesight, so don't expect expert marksmanship :-) The friend who bought it at auction did some practice with it and has three shots almost touching at 50 yards, so she will shoot! 490 grains of lead ball will put down just about anything one will encounter in North America!

Ooh pretty! I used to shoot black powder. Built my own 50 cal flintlock. Like to say I took $300 worth of parts and built a $200 rifle. I installed a double set trigger similar to what you have and never have bee able to adjust it to not be a real dangerous hair trigger. No matter what I do it seems to go off in a gentle breeze so I've relegated it to a wall hanger along with my hill country schuetzen rifle for which I've never been able to solve a low point of impact problem. Look pretty on the wall anyway.....Mel

I have a good friend who collects such things and I bet he could tell you how to cure the accuracy problem. He is well known for making old rifles shoot like a laser!

radio, yeah, I have a fairly rare 22LR caliber example. Amazing technology for the late 1800's. Has a false muzzle that is ported, double set triggers ( good one) and a wonderful oversized dish type rear peep adjustable for windage and elevation by way of a clock key. I think the tunnel type front sight is a replacement resulting in a height above bore problem which makes it shoot low. Could be, since those matches are at very long ranges, the bullet is still rising to cross the line of sight at 50 yards and would be right on at longer ranges. Gonna have to try it at a hundred or two hundred yards some time to see if that's the issue. I've posted a pic here before but it's probably gone now. Will have to take another.....Mel

Time to go Coon hunting... Coon hunting... Try coon fishing, a blast Tie a chicken bone on a fishing pole ( no hooks) get beer, cast the bait (coons are everywhere) when the line starts to move. jerk and reel as fast as you can and if you see the coon get a picture if not drink a beer and try again. Nobody gets hurt but it's a blast. Im sure it's a redneck event but...how cares. It's funny.

Shoulda picked up that fresh roadkill racoon the other day. ;p my neighbor wouldn't mind at all if I had something that would take out the one that keeps trying to get to his chickens. Other neighbors might if it was something they could hear. Such is cul-de-sac life.

Use a .22 of yours or a friends and buy some Aguila Colibri ammo www.academy.com/shop/pdp/aguila-ammunition-colibri-22-20-grain-rimfire-ammunition It is little more than the primer and makes very little noise. It can be used in one, but will not cycle a semi auto. set up a live trap to catch the critter, then dispatch it with the Aguila

Only markings are Schuler and the number 1 under the wood fore end. I think the only thing I really need is a much lower front sight. As I said, the front sight looks to be a replacement as the rifle has mounts for a scope. Figure the original front sight was removed for the scope. The rear sight of course is readily removable. Rifle shoots one hole groups but groups abut 6-8 inches low. Not interested in selling as I sort of collect old Martini type action singe shot 22's. Pic below. crappy flintlock above it. Second pic shows the cool sight..Mel PS: I was told from the guy I got it from that this rifle was from the Texas Hill country but from my research, I believe it was actually made in Germany around the turn of the century. Makes sense as Fredericksburg, TX used to be the site for schutzenfests and it's very German around here, not surprising a German made rifle would show up here at all. What is surprising is the caliber. First non metric 22LR of it's type I've seen. Most schutzens seem to be metric European calibers.

It is an interesting piece of workmanship. 25 cal false muzzle to protect the 22 cal actual muzzle when cleaning. Half inch oblong ports on each side for I don't know what reason. Why port a 22 anyway? Color case hardened receiver. One inch full octagon barrel so the rifle is a heavy beast. Martini type drop block action and a heavy steel hooked buttplate. They shot these freehand I guess. Real tack driver. I guess I should remove the newer front sight and install an old timey looking scope. That would be uber cool but I don't shoot this gun much as I prefer the English BSA Martini type action 22's for shooting. Much lighter and incredibly accurate with way more sight options....Mel

I like to one above it more though I sent this to my friend to see if he knows anything about it. I really, really, really want a .36 or .40 cal flinter for a skwerrl gun!

I used to have a Hopkins and Allen underhammer 36 cal. Wonderful out to about 75 yards. Won a lot of 50 yard quarter shoots with that rifle. Everyone would throw their quarters into a hat and shot closest to the center of an X won the pot. When I made my Texas move and was selling off most my black powder stuff I found a big bag of quarters I had won and forgotten about *L* and some were even silver. Cool!.
I found a pic of a very similar schuetzen online and as I suspected, the front sight is way lower than that on mine ad the rear identical. Half as high at best, which probably explains the uber low shooting.
I had fun building that flintlock, even did my own barrel browning instead of blueing and I used premium parts. Dead accurate at 100 yards as I installed a rear target type sight. Unsafe as all get out though. Had it go off as I picked it up one time. Sadly, I'm not much of a flintlock builder....Mel
