Pulled this batch about a week ago and been working on improving the photo process. I'm using a Galaxy S6 in PRO Mode, keeping the ISO at 50, shutter speed between 1/30 & 1/8 (depending on the rock), and just discovered the manual focus (gives a little more control for crisper shots). I'm in the process of building a light box, using a plastic bin and some LED lights from IKEA. Lots of tinkering to do. Anyway, here's a few of the better ones. Mostly San Jacintos Thanks for looking......Jeremy 1) Texas Palm - subtle white fibers 2) A few San Jacinto Agates & Jaspers.... 3) 4) 5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) A couple San Jacinto Sagenites 12) 13) Slice from a piece of coral or bryozoan that was picked up in the San Jacinto gravels 14) Piece of rhyolite picked up in Toyah, TX. Cool little blue crystal.... 15) Agatized piece of coral from San Jacinto. (experiment with light box) 16) Another San Jacinto, experimenting with light box 17) Couple pieces of coral from jamesp18) 19) 1st piece of flint from spiceman to get finished. That Flintridge material is way cool! More to come....Thanks again, spiceman!!!!

wow those San Jacinto Sagenites are super cool. #18 looks like some Georgia coral.

First, those are spectacular rocks. polish.
The camera blows my mind. I like the countertop better than the light box. Seem like eyes adjust to stone better with less color contrast. The S6 camera is highly rated, manual focus may come in handy but your focus always seems bang on. Camera cost/quality effected by better auto focus.
That coral does look like Georgia coral. Been in my backyard ?
Sagenites off the chart.
Shutter speeds of 1/10 to 1/30 seems to work best with Nikon. You must have phone clamped/tripod-ed ?

Very hit or miss in the gravels. #17 & #18 are from James. He sent me some a while back, just getting them rolling through the batches. I love the pattern in the coral and it really pops when photoraphed.

Just learning how to utilize the camera functions. Light box is a major work in progress! I had way too much white on the 1st attempt and it bleaches all the photos. Next attempt will be to have a darker, less reflective background and an attempt to re-direct / soften the lights to eliminate spots. The goal is to have a consistent way to take photographs without using my desk at work. By the way, that coral is yours, so thanks again!

I really love checking out each one of these. Very nice stuff! I'm working on those rocks you sent and they are coming along nicely so far. Hope I can get close to these but not holding my breath. Ha!

Also, shooting portrait instead of landscape, seems to make better photos. I have a tripod, just need to find a platform to get rocks closer to the camera.

I have rested my heavy Nikon on 2 soup cans spaced. A black chunk of rubber. Small boxes. At 1/10 to 1/30 and close to rock the shakes will mess up focus. Closer camera gets to rock the more critical it is to hold camera still. I do zoom back to reduce shake. Lens is not digital zoom so image quality is not so much an issue. The lightweight phone sure makes life easier. I have trouble with focus because my eyes don't always agree with manual focus of the camera. That is hard to solve. The auto focus reads true on the Nikon though. Depends on quality of AF sensor I understand 'resting on desk' with the phone. Very steady. Tripods can still shake. And hitting the shutter can cause shake of course.

I understand 'resting on desk' with the phone. Very steady. Tripods can still shake. And hitting the shutter can cause shake of course. Workbench with Lot-o & tumblers underneath is not good for photography! Started taking photos in the lightbox, the other night, and every photo came out blurry. Got really frustrated with bleached blurry photos, until I figured out that the workbench was vibrating! Now I have to fix the crappy lightbox. My tripod came with a remote that should eliminate shaking, but I haven't used it yet.
