Ok Jeremy, the first test is in. Here's how I set it up. Same as in your picture, I put a diffuser between the soft box and the rock.
Can anyone tell which one(s) were shot with the double diffuser? Have a preference?
I think the one with the hard specular highlight looks shinier and is my preference. The more diffused shots make the rock not look as shiny. I prefer the sharp edged shadow. Indictates fine shine better to my eye. I liked Randy's umbrella best the ribs indicating extraordinary shine.

Got to digest all of this photo info txrockhunter Garage Rocker. Yes, still have 3 greenhouses with covers on them. And two shed roofs with Lexan roof panels for natural lighting within. adds up to 3 maybe 4 different light screens. One of the Lexan covers is two double layer 10mm panels spaced 2 feet apart. The area under the spaced panels is strange due to the intense diffusion. Never thought about greenhouse covers, one of their functions is to diffuse light for plant health. Shade clothes 30-40-50-60-70-80-90% sun block are used in the industry.

Thank you for taking the time to put that together! So 1 & 3 are with the double diffuser? Not sure it was the big difference I thought it would be. The biggest problem I had with it was the extra work positioning the rock to manage glare. Since there was an extra diffuser between the light and (closer to) the rock, there was a bigger reflection to deal with, even though it was not as defined as when using one diffuser. I could have had many pictures like this:
For the extra work setting up the rig and adjusting the light, second diffuser and rock during shots, I believe I'm going to stick with my original plan. I think for pics of rocks that are supposed to be wet shiny, my preference is for the defined highlight also. That said, I wouldn't discourage you from your own experimentation with it. Let us know what happens...
Oh, and yes, #1 and #3 were with the second diffuser.

Just spend 20 min scrolling up and Down page trying to decide on a favorite, but love them all. Decided to try some reverse psycology on my self and find one that i didn't like! Also failed so I simply decided to favorite them all😄

My eyes are picking up subtle differences between the 3 but for some reason it's not hitting my brain what exactly they are LOL I'm still stuck on getting the tumbling down so I don't have to cab a million stones 😂 and learn mineralogy on top of that!! I'm going to leave the photography to you guys for a while. They all look so great!!! Melissa
