Went to the mouth Doctor today(It hurts just to say the name) sleeping with tooth pain.(fun) my tooth is infected and a crown is the next step. (More fun) This gets me in trouble, Thinking abut having a crown made from flint ridge flint or some kind of agate. It's different and could look cold. Nobody will see your back teeth away.
Just another crazy thought.

May damage the opposing tooth. Teeth are an aragonite blend and much softer than flint or agate. That said. i would rather have an amethyst tooth!

Purple amethyst or yellow that way a smoker don't have to worry about yellowing. There could be money in this....pick the color of your crown. $$$

I just need to pick a cool color rock/crown. But not too hard. Shotgunner told me to look out for that possible problem. Sleepless nights (tooth pain) will help me handle the crown pain, if there is any.

spiceman, Was raised poor and had little dental care as a child. As a result, I get to have crowns and root canals more often than I would like. After my last nightmarish root canal and crown by a clown that took forever, I learned to go to an endodontist. Zero pain and super fast and efficient. Guy back in Commiefornia even used some kind of dang laser thingee. Not even much more expensive than a regular dentist either. Hope your experience is good and not too miserable.....Mel

Shouldn’t be any pain now. Didn’t he drill a hole to relieve pressure (= pain) and kill the nerve already?
Back tooth prolly three roots = a few more dinero for the root canal. Gold crown finishes the job right.
Be fun watchin’ some lab guy tryin’ to carve a rock to fit the impression, though.

Funny thread! The pain you are enduring is not funny, but this reminded me of another forum I frequent. There is actually a section titled "Family dentistry forum" and a Dremel tool and JB weld are the preferred recommendations over there, so may work well for you also. Almost forgot! Generous amounts of alcoholic "pain killer and mouthwash" are frequently prescribed by the helpful souls who offer unending advice.

For decades, I used to park a wintergreen lifesaver between my gum and molars. Between that and three kids leaching my teeth, I need 2 crowns. Had one root canal already. Even after insurance, though, I don't think the cost of 2 crowns is justified considering my age and health. I think I'll just have them pulled. The rest of my teeth are fine. No pain, so I keep putting the dentist off. The root canal I had done about 20 years ago with no insurance- 750.00 then. It was horrible. My roots were all twisted and grown together. The dentist kept breaking bits and had to stop and try to hunt down the smallest ones he had. It was a flippin' nightmare and the Novocaine wore off. Yeah, I'm in no hurry to go back.
Best of luck to you. Tell them you have always needed extra shots so they will give you more, otherwise they try to get by with the minimum.

The last crown I had put on in an emergency the dentist had a cnc machine and he made it on the spot. I watched grind away at the composite and it took about 15 minutes. Don't see why they couldn't do that with a rock....just sayin. What kind of stone would be toughest? Jade I would think, its not the hardest but it is tough.

Kind of annoying crown story and one reason I hate going to the dentist. Had to have a root canal and crown. All went well and the dentist put on a temporary crown while I was waiting for the regular crown to be manufactured. Came back for the installation and the dental assistant went to pull off the temporary crown and had used the wrong glue so it held too tight. Her pliers slipped and she broke the opposite dang tooth off, so there goes another tooth requiring another crown. Another thousand bucks and they never even offered me a discount but at the time I had insurance so it was not too bad. Man, some days life just sucks though....Mel

I always ask them if it's safe- a reference to Marathon Man with Dustin Hoffman. My last dentist says, well, that's a pretty old movie, it must have left an impression. (duh)

Dentist took me to the lab where they have a little computer controlled diamond bit carving machine. Zirconia crown blanks look like this(the blocks with the metal stud sticking out of them): Or from the discs like this: Carving machine How many dollars worth of crowns on this blank. We're in the wrong biz. Just put a slice of spice's Flint Ridge in the machine. Imagine the crazy cabs one could make on this machine. Carving bit fixed, computer moves the blank
