Interesting. Thank you. They have the banded iron (jasper & hematite) in your area as well? yes, I just talked to a guy that works at the mines and he is suppose to bring a sample. I have a quest out after the posts I seen this week. Will also source my guy for the mary ellen I'll get second in line for banded iron. Behind Bob of course.

Move yourself to the front of the line! I'm more interested in his Mary Ellen, Scott. Already have a couple hundred pounds of various types of banded iron. Always looking to add more, but it's not high on my list.

You can get a bowl off of the bottom of an old Weber grill and bury it in the ground for better results. But straight in the ground works fine. You may be questioned by your friends why you have rocks in your back pack if hiking.

I know I have seen it around but will have to locate a good source. Bingamite and silkstone is another question. They actually come from a different part of the iron range than the Mary Ellen and they have closed all the dumps and no friends on that end of our world. We don't even see it here very often. I know a guy that might have some or a source and will try and hunt him down if he hasn't gone south.

Woke up anxious this morning. Pumped about heat treatment started 3 days ago, batch is cooled down and ready to open furnace this Saturday morning. This is the batch. It filled the furnace at about 80 pounds. Oh please let these corals do this(from same creek as these small samples):

Yes, please. We'll be watching. Anxious. Open the furnace day is a treat Randy. This is my favorite rock to cook and I probably will never get any more. This waterfall dug a deep hole to fine coral. Most of the coral is at the interface of the white clay and the gray clay(shelf coral) just 2 feet above water . The hole is 5 feet deep and had to be snorkel dived. Lots of critters. Goosebumps.

Hope you get some good orange and black. I think that's my favorite combo. Can imagine all sorts of critters, with various multiples of legs in a spot like that. Your exclusive spot?

Not mine probably. But a testament to how much coral is down under NW of Zephyr Hills Florida. Back when NW Zephyr had orange groves the AG drainage ditches were full of it. It is 20 feet down under the entire ~10 mile X 10 mile area. A friend had a rock shop for many years in Tampa FL. He knew a lady that had a 4 acre surface exposure of Zephyr coral. He was a very successful lapidarian back in the hey day. About half his income was made from selling cabs and knapping material from that lady's back yard. Other coral from NW Zephyr, his friend's orange groves and small lake shore in the area. Now covered with subdivisions, coral spots few and far between.

Good example of a drab rock turning a fine color. Starting color is similar to rust color, guessing high iron content. From sitting in iron laden clay for many moons. Camera does not give purple justice, but heated chip is purple.

Beautiful coral Jimbo but just can't ignore the ratchet hammer, what? It's totally acceptable, in fact necessary, in James' world. Never gave it a second thought.

Yeah you're right, Think he's made a combo toothbrush/toilet brush gizmo? ribs broken from laughing. Needed that BOOST I believe we settled on the trade name "the rammer" for the ratchet hammer. Maybe Garage Rocker will help us with a trade name for THAT!
