They are flying in Thursday, so we would go straight to the mine from the airport, unless they want to spend a night in Vegas then we have more time Friday. @shotgunner , jeannie too We will have to keep our original " Hitting the Copper Mines" plan. It's 3 hours one way from Vegas to Cedar City so we'll hunt Thursday with you James then head on to Cedar City after. Maybe Sunday when we come back that way we can visit another site as well. That will work. Have two mines in mind already. Thursday we will go to the closest and easiest to reach mine. Has a lot of really nice dolomite specimens, siderite, cuprite and chrysocolla. This is a cab from that mine. Much more blue in better lighting. Took the photo too late in the day.: 20170206_130130-1 by James Sloane, on Flickr Then on your way back hit the other mine, which is a little further driving and a lot of it dirt road. That mine has chrysocolla, rosasite (a bright blue copper ore), bromargyrite (silver bromide), occasionally azurite, etc. This is a cab from the ore of that mine: 20160507_114129 by James Sloane, on Flickr

All of you have a good time, and stay safe. If it weren't for scheduled finger surgery Wednesday, I'd be there. Best regards.

We're getting close! Since I'm going to be guiding the Saturday trips (Two, Two, Two trips in one!) & hosting the potluck at my house, I need a tally of who's coming. Please send me a private message. Include how many people in your party. I will respond with my address, but don't want to post it here. I'll be playing the part of Tony & providing burgers (if you want hot dogs, let me know) & need to buy them in advance. Tony will play the part of an anonymous rockhound. If you're traveling from afar, I won't expect any rockpickerforever type chile & cheese casseroles, but we DO have grocery stores with deli sections here, so you can buy whatever. We can probably figure out what's needed right before we head back from Holt Canyon to Cedar City. We don't want alcohol at the house, so I hope softer drinks are OK. Lynn

orrum there's Cedar Breaks trailer park about 2 miles from our house. There's a KOA another half mile away. I have no experience with either, so Google is your friend. Lynn

Anyone for a trip to the east for septarians? BTW - down to 29 degrees F tonight! I have seen it snow in May, 80 degrees the day after. Omg'sh never dreamed it may be cold when we go ππ I gotta remember to check the weather! Since we're coming in Thursday night an others Friday night, we're free all day Friday if zarguy doesn't have anything planned. I was hoping to run by and visit with you a bit. I really would like some Septarians though!!!! You got the hook up? It is going to be 95F when you reach Vegas Thursday. Good news is the high winds will be gone.

Zarguy count us as two aldo. Thanks for the info on campgrounds. Dave told me about the KOA also. If it's 3 miles away that's good distance for meetup in the am for hounding.

A brief glimpse of our Local Geology for our RTH visitors. East of and towering above Cedar City, the Red Hill is part of the western edge of the Colorado Plateau, made up of historic rock layers. Just as you enter Cedar Canyon on Utah 14, the layers at the bottom of the left hill are the Chinle Formation, the same 225 million year old volcanic ash fall layers that make up the Painted Desert of Arizona fame. The very top layer of the Chinle is the Petrified Forest Member, the same layer famous for the huge beautiful petrified logs in the Petrified Forest east of Holbrook Arizona. Above the Chinle towers the Moenave and Navajo Sandstone. These layers were deposited during the Triassic and Jurassic dinosaur hours, days, weeks, months, years, centuries, and Melania. Here is a diagram of the rock columns above and below the Chinle, and the time frame it fits in.
