Breastfeeding did not come naturally to me and I really tried. Kept getting infections and was constantly miserable. Only one of my four breast fed past 1 month. I was made for the rest of motherhood and thoroughly enjoyed it. My last one, at 20 years old, recently told me he did not want to come back to California, and will stay in OH and work and go to school, while living with his sister. I called her to make sure it was ok, and she said he is a big help there with her dogs and household chores. In short, I love being a mom, but I now have an empty nest and miss having them around. All four kids are successful and off of my payroll. I believe I am a successful mother, and I will always be here to lend an ear and give advice if they need me. I would have loved for them to stay close to me, but that is not my call. They are all flying on their own! Isn't that what it's all about?

Awesome post mom, Yes Successful and happy children with a future tells what kind of mother you have been. Dads don't have that closeness early in child rearing but a good dad really helps in that department. Nailed it.. that's what being a GOOD mother is about, not simply giving birth. Congrats.

Breast milk is not a singular milk. It changes with the infants growth. Starting with antibody rich milk since the infant is not born with an intact immune system. Then the milk composition changes increasing fat content for neurological development. Then it increases in protein for muscle and other tissue growth. Then finally the mineral content increases for bone mineralization.
Breast feeding also provides brain developing DHA and is a secondary source of flora that account for the majority of immunity.
As for time I recommend 2 years for a simple reason. The gut is still more permeable up to the age of two. This increases the risk of food allergies from the absorption of protein solutes in to the bloodstream is solids are started too early. Therefore I would recommend a minimum of a year for breast feeding but closer to 2 years is even better.

Good points all.. Mine had to come back to Dad's arms after a divorce but within a year we had set her up in a successful business, she ran it for 7 years, increased the value, put money in her pocket during that time and then sold it for a good price. Now she's back in college, owns her own home and newer Toyota and is more confident, secure and will never give her dad grandkids. grin.. Watch your grandkids everyone. Always teased her about having to breast feed her since she didn't have a mom around.. hehehehe Yep on her own, lives by Boulder and I live 250 miles away and we don't interfere in the others lives or how we choose to live them. Fine young, independent woman.

My son was only breastfed for a month or so. Wife couldn't handle it...had issues similar to jeannie. I understand the scientific stuff that vegasjames brought into this thread, but we had no issues healthwise with our son. No need speaking to what he's done since. All I'll say is that he hasn't been in the home since he was 17. He's 25 now. All I'll say is all is good for him. Dave

Just like people who can smoke all their life and never get cancer. I was also one of those exceptions. I was allergic to both mother's milk and cow's milk and so I was raised on soy. And I have always been quite healthy other than having the food allergies until the age of 5 when I finally outgrew the allergies. It is actually quite common for children to outgrow their allergies or asthma around the age of 5, when their adrenals finally mature, provided the adrenals are not being taxed or atrophied with stimulant or steroid medications.

French immigrant family here. Raised on goat's milk. Never had allergies and too poor to afford a cow but could afford a goat.
