Dear lord, some people--! This young black guy on the TV this morning, south Florida, he wasn't worried at all. "There's nothing to be scared of," he says. "What's there to be scared of?" Does he think this is a Disneyworld ride? Just to prove that stupidity has no color or gender, they then showed 2 white women, one with a baby on her hip, who also seemed unconcerned. "We've been through it all before," says one. She was, maybe, 25 years old. How much preparations do you think these people made? And yet they'll expect others to risk their lives to come rescue them. Sorry, but I think you wouldn't have mentioned the man was black if color was not some of the issue. Man and a couple of women will work. No idea how much preparation they did. Bob gave a blow by blow so we know how much he did. Difficult to tell the two apart. NOT JUST FOR YOU lookatthat Probably the crappiest time in all their lives to be macho. captbob included. The way I see it Bob, the woman with the child that can not protect itself and pretty much all that stayed when they had a chance and the means to leave are playing Russian roulette with OTHER PEOPLES LIVES. I have been biting my tongue/fingers, not saying much but worrying about Bobs wife. Did she make her own choice whether to leave or not? Did she stay just to appease him? Did she have a say in the matter at all? Wouldn't be my place to say anything if no rescuers were put in harms way but we lost some brave people in most of the hurricanes when they were trying to save others and I have no doubt that some will be lost again. I do not wish anyone dead (yeah, even Bob) but a lot of people put three shells in the revolver instead of just one with this storm and there is going to be a lot of crying when the wind stops. Wish I could but I can not be indifferent so I keep checking back and worrying about all of the people in the path of this storm. By the way, Rush L has been calling this fake news all week and telling everyone to ignore it then jumped up and ran. BTW 2. Former living presidents got together to collect money for the Texas people in need and uninvited the twit in chief tried to include himself by tweeting "WE" when he mentioned it. Over and over and over he just keeps doing nothing but piss people off and the unpublicans just stay in lock step with their outside benefactors. SSSSCCCCRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Jim

Did she have a say in the matter at all? I find your sudden interest and concern for my wife rather feigned after the vile comments you have made here regarding her in the past. Why wouldn't she have a say in the matter? She is my wife, not some indentured whore that I bought off the internet. But yes, as a matter of fact, I tried to get her to fly out at least 5 days ago, when there was both time and flight availability to do so. No cost to her and a visit with her parents. She opted to stay, I believe mostly because she was critically needed at work. Not that it is any of your business nor concern. You just brought it up to try to goad me. Well, I couldn't possibly care one iota what you think or say. So please, go f*ck yourself.

And the supposed vile things I said would still be there if you quoted me so show us some proof. Fake news? How sweet, no cost to her. Oh wait, aren't you married? So, if there is no storm she has to pay her own way? I really am concerned about her, like everyone was concerned about Helen's husband. Many times I heard "I feel really bad for her husband". Hunker down sir and don't forget, if it gets really bad you are the one that is supposed to be on top protecting her. Please do not show up at the life boat with your dress on. Jim

Rich, (that was an older news article) it all depends on which way the storm is coming in from as to the possible surge. A hurricane coming ashore from out in the Gulf, like on a from southwest to northeast track would indeed have quite a surge. A hurricane, like Irma, headed north coming from the south will bring much less of a surge. I believe we are forecast to have a 3 to 6 foot "surge" with Irma. Even folks living on our barrier islands could handle that. Might flood some low lying streets due to drainage problems, but that would most likely be from the rain rather than a surge.
Our house here is above the evacuation zone levels, which is why we bought here. Lower insurance! It would take a 25 foot storm surge to bother us. I see that kinda storm coming and we're headed outta Dodge in a quickness. Block house, hurricane reinforced roof and storm shutters on every window and I'm willing to ride this one out. Concern would be from the trees in the neighborhood / yard, but we have sandy soil here, not clay. Soil drains water fast. Uprooted (healthy) trees in such soil are uncommon. (hope I didn't jinx myself there!)
I'd guess 90% of the folks in our neighborhood are staying. We are not in any evacuation zone. If I'm being dumb, I have LOTS of company. Drove around neighborhood this afternoon - estimate less than 25% have hurricane shutters up. Some may wish they had done so due to flying debris - be it tree limbs or the neighbors BBQ grill being relocated.
Do wish this were happening during the day so I could get pictures. Lots of folks staying in areas that I would consider questionable.
Thanks to all for any good thoughts & wishes. We will be fine. May lose power, time will tell. Should start getting interesting tomorrow afternoon. Many Florida locations may prove to be news worthy after this storm, but I don't expect our area to be seeing Jim Cantore doing any live reports on the Weather Channel. Which would make my wife's day - she loves that guy!

But I wasn't about to let a justifiable opportunity to (once again) tell you to go f*ck yourself pass! You deleted hundreds of posts when you left. EVERYONE that was here knows that. But, she did just go up to visit family on an annual get-away, and yes, she did pay for her airfare. So? This storm instance I told her I'd take care of it so that wouldn't be a concern or issue for her. She chose not to go. Period. nice try ...

Now they are saying Irma will still be a Cat 1 in southern Georgia. That's a change for the worse.

Where is the "thumbs down" button? C'mon Rob, one hurricane's experience for the record. You guys get serious winds up there. across those lakes. Worse, 0F wind, burr. when we get the wind off of Lake Superior there is 360 miles give or take with nothing to stop it. Its not a hurricane but you better have not taken your long johns off before the 4th of July and put them back on in Aug. In the summer water temp in upper 30s to low 40s, Only seen the lake freeze completely over a couple of times. November is storm season with the cold air and so called warm water causes a pretty good contrast.

Irma sure did displace a lot of water? wow! Wind reversal from eye wall passing over Lake Okeechobee, Okeechobee Hurricane 1928. Pushed the Lake to the blue lines south, shortly after reversed the lake to the north blue lines. Lake was 20 feet deeper on south, then reversed to 10 feet deeper on north. Most lakefront dwellers had no chance of survival. Est. 90 MPH winds Lake like 30 miles across, so probably 1/4 the size of the hurricane eye. Fitting size for max surges. Path. Moving up the peninsula. Probably not as powerful as Irma as Irma is predicted. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1928_Okeechobee_hurricane1928 Puerto Rican low tech wind speed detector, 2 X 4 thru the palm " Lake Okeechobee and Everglades[edit] Inland, the hurricane wreaked much more widespread destruction along the more heavily populated coast of Lake Okeechobee. Residents had been warned to evacuate the low ground earlier in the day, but after the hurricane did not arrive on schedule, many thought it had missed and returned to their homes. In the weeks prior to storm, heavy rainfall caused the lake to rise 3 ft (0.91 m) between August 10 and September 10 and filled nearby canals and ditches. Precipitation from the hurricane itself caused Lake Okeechobee to rise further.[23] When the worst of the storm crossed the lake, the south-blowing wind caused a storm surge to overflow the small dike that had been built at the south end of the lake. The resulting flood covered an area of hundreds of square miles with water that in some places was over 20 ft (6 m) deep. Houses were floated off of their foundations and dashed to pieces against any obstacle they encountered.[25] Most survivors and bodies were washed out into the Everglades where many of the bodies were never found.[26] Agricultural losses in the area surrounding Lake Okeechobee were also significant, with virtually all crops destroyed and over 150 tractors suffering damage.[7] This storm total rainfall graphic for the Lake Okeechobee hurricane covers September 15–19, 1928 As the rear eyewall passed over the area, the flood reversed itself, breaking the dikes along the northern coast of the lake and causing similar but smaller flooding.[26] Route 98, then known as Conner's Highway, was closed until January, when the bridge across the Onosohatchee River at Taylor Creek was replaced after the original bridge was carried about 150 ft (46 m) upstream during the storm.[27] In Okeechobee County, homes along the lake were destroyed by the storm surge, while dwellings within the city of Okeechobee were severely impacted or demolished by winds of at least 90 mph (140 km/h). However, brick and concrete-structured dwellings received little damage. A number of three-story business buildings collapsed during the storm.[28] Almost all roads were left impassable, while communications were nearly wiped out.[29] Overall, 27 deaths occurred in Okeechobee County. Along the southwestern shore of Lake Okeechobee, the towns of Clewiston and Moore Haven were both flooded, but much of the damage to houses was due to strong winds.[28"

So it's full on dark 30 and the girl dog starts barking. W.U. goes to look out the front door window to see why. I'm out in the front yard spreading lawn fertilizer on the grass. Never let a good rain soaking go to waste! How'd that stoopid dog hear me walking on grass? Breezy here, light sprinkles from time to time. Several hours to go 'til trop. storm winds and hurricane winds probably not until after 10 or so tonight. 10pm - 4am ish will be the fun. May take a nap this afternoon. Folks on the SW coast are gonna get hit by one heck of a storm surge. Naples area. If forecast is anywhere near close, entire barrier islands could be underwater. Hope they are hyping the storm surge for TV drama or it is gonna be bad down there. Rich folks on the islands and regular folks on the mainland down there. Bad for all. Will check back later. Back to helping a neighbor put up his shutters in a half hour or so. Changed his mind (or his wife changed it for him!) and now we gotta rush to get 'em up before the rain.
