Malagasy Hissing Cockroach Do Palmetto bugs look that big too? I never saw one before. jamespClose. No that big . Looks the same. Not good to hold a palmetto bug, they put out a rancid fluid. And don't step on one, lots of yellow juicy gelatin, totally obnoxious. Bears love em, gracious. They hang out in numbers, like dozens in a small pocket. run up you legs and make you dance(and stink). Give me the jeebies. And get in bed with you. If you smash it, you will have to clean up the mess. Smell intolerable.

They eat the whole liver. Fried or boiled or some other way. My son likes whitefish livers, fried. Goofy kid, didn't like beef roast, made the livers on a whim. Them he liked.
Bear season here for my wife and I on Friday.
A common phrase used by UP Fisher!an is kala kala kala. Fish fish fish. Usually called out when they ain't biting. A desperation move, it doesn't work.

Officially named burbot. Called eelpout in Minnesota. Lawyers in much of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan. Codfish like. Excellent white flesh, not much of it. Mostly a mouth with liver attached. Slimmy, wrap around your arm while you are unhooking them, bottom feeders. Not sure how they got the name "lawyer"

They are called Lingcod around here. Only freshwater member of the cod family. (Burbot) has 3-4 times the vitamin D and 4-10 times the vitamin A of cod liver oil.

Plus they put up one hell of a fight. Jaw power is unreal, better have jaw spreaders or you will have a tough time getting your hook back. Below is the world record caught here in Saskatchewan. 26 lbs.

When my dad would get a bear my mom would render the fat. She would make bars of lye soap. The rest she used as frying lard. She made a type of western style doughnut called 'bear sign' due to it being poured batter that fried up with the shape of bear scat. Rolled in sugar, good stuff. They would take the hind quarters to be cured and smoked like ham. Thin slices fried up for breakfast was wonderful. The rest was made into sausage, wieners and salami. I first ran into bear sign in the Louis L'Amour novels. I think I read them all and came across bear sign in many of them. Sounded wonderful! I don't think it was ever mentioned that they looked like bear scat! Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!

CVS had only one box of this, so I gave it to a friend who had bronchitis with a very bad cough. Bought PRID for husband. PRID right next to the CVS salve. It is also a black salve. Applied to boil, noticeably better in the morning. Does't need it any more! Thanks!
