OK, I'm getting some #20, 16 and 12 nails tomorrow and give glue a shot.

Somewhere on here, Mel said he used Scotch Permanent Outdoor tape ( or similar name) because he wanted to cab in cold weather. Worked well. Will try to find the post. Someone recently brought it up again. I'm that someone. Good luck in whatever you do. Dave

Do you want me to find that thread for you? Dave No, I'll find it if this doesn't work. It gets cold here, but we don't keep the place super warm. Dries us all out and messes with the sinuses. We're quite comfortable in a cooler room, but the water in the trays gets to cool for the wax. I'll find some way to keep cabbing.

I tried the tape and it wasn't reliable. I use gorilla glue and these dop sticks made from dowels and chair leg caps. imgbox.com/CBx7xZrPMost of the glue comes off when the stick and cab is frozen and then snapped off. Sometimes I need to scrape off the glue with a utility knife. The smaller sticks work better.

I have tried the freezer thing and it sometimes breaks a cab snapping it off. Worse is if the cab is porous aND absorbs water. Ask the lovely Susan about the fantastic opals I cabbed in Q. She and a friend put them in the freezer to remove the super glue dop and half the cabs crazed and one incredible boulder opal snapped as they pushed it off. No freezers for me. Hey Tela how about warm water for your Genie tray and lay a aquarium heater in it?

Trays could be kept in the house too, that way you start with warm trays and warm water.

I use a hot plate to heat up the stones, to keep it on the stick heat, the rock has to be really hot, i cab in the cold and never had a problem. I think your cold and her cold aren't similar. What color wax you using?

I got tired of fussing around with dop wax. I currently use various sizes of wooden dowels and superglue with an accelerator to quickly set the glue. I soak in acetone afterwards to remove. Works well for me. I prefer wood dowel over nails, it's easier on my hands.

Tela what about something like this Bettatherm Mini Size Betta Bowl Heater www.amazon.com/dp/B004I6MPCS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_tIsYzbT0EZMWEYou could put it in the tray to keep the water warm. Not sure how hot it gets but it's meant to keep a small fish bowl warm so I don't think it would get too hot. I think there are some that go under a fish bowl too that might work. Andrea

Ok Tela I have about a 150 turquoise cabs backed and ready to cab. They need to be finished for a show on Oct 7th. So Here Is S Pic Of About 35 Getting Super glued. First pic is 20d nails stuck in styroform. Second pic is with them glued on. I put the glue on about half then place the preform on the naol. Then glue the second half and put the preforms on. I think they stick better if you let them sit a bit while you put on glue b4 putting the cabs on. There is no rush the glue will wait on you. The cab wil want to float for a milisecond then it settles. They will move a little but you can scoot it back. Time you do a few youbwill develope a good move. When I glue small opals I put accelerator on the cab and the glue on the nail. It sets the condo it touches. I hope these pics work because I don't want to type all this again.... Attachments:
