for all i wouldnt go more than 1000 Keep in mind this is the first 14" saw to hit craigslist in all of Michigan this entire year. Supply and demand come into play around these parts. I am guessing the auction price will be nice and low because they do not have the words lapidary or diamond saw anywhere in their listings. Anytime something does get listed around here with lapidary listed they get scooped up right away. $1,000 would probably be my high number too. Most of that going to the saw. Like $700 saw and $300 for the arbor. Chuck I never even thought to look at the online listings. There are pictures of the saw and the cabber on Facebook, but you're right about the word "lapidary". They're listed as "stone polisher" and "stone cutter". They didn't even use the word "saw".

I bought a really nice 6" trim saw for $25 because it was listed as a tile saw. Chuck

I'd top out at $400 each. but try and start the bids at 200 in case there are no other bidders. Been sitting a long time? You'll need new wheels. Go diamond and do yourself a favor.

The hp unit is identical to the one being rebuilt for the club shop. It's pretty much bulletproof. I always remove old SiC wheels with a hammer, the metal cores are either lead or babbit, easy to remove. I built a similar one to order for a guy once, added a 3rd wheel in the middle of the right side and drilled and tapped a 3rd water line.

Yeah, the expando wheels are probably old, cracked and brittle. in other words, dangerous.

Most important thing to keep in mind with Expandos is never run them without belts on them, even when brand new. If there is excessive cracking where the rubber is bonded to the hub, the rubber is sticky like tar or if the ribs easily split with a little stretching they should be replaced. Otherwise if everything spins smoothly just use them. The only thing that will break down the SBR, latex blend those are made of in many, many years of UV exposure. Full disclosure, a NW rubber company I have worked with makes the Scott-Murray expandos that Lortone sells. I have done maintenance on the molds and wrote the work instructions for molding them.

I really think catmandewe Tony gave you the best range, he sets pricing and sells in Q-site where you can't spit without some of it getting on a piece of lapidary equipment. Bottom line is what you're willing to pay.

Jugglerguy, That 14" Frantom saw is a great saw. It has a real vise, unlike the one Lortone uses on the 12" & 14" similar saws. I hope you win the bidding. Lynn

Here in the desert southwest, the dryness can dry them out so badly they crack and split. Also, if they are left in our heat for years, they tend to crack and split too. I've even had a few lose their drape due to age and heat that stiffened them up. New ones are cheaper than a hospital bill and they do a much better job. Just my experiences tho...

The auction is over, and I don’t have to figure out how to get anything home. The cab machine went for $550 and the saw for $725, which was more than they were worth to me. I wasn’t sure I wanted to get into a better saw anyway, but I wasn’t going to pass it up for a great price. Thanks again to everyone for all the great advice.

Bummer. I had my fingers crossed that you would get the saw. $725 is a fair price but not a great price. Any idea how many bidders were going for them?

Chuck I wasn’t at the auction, so all I know is the selling prices. Neither was just a little over my bid, so there were at least two other bidders.

Would have been worse if it went for just a bit over your max. Chuck

Not surprising on the saw, my 70ish year old beat up 14 inch HP has a standing offer for $700.00 and so far I'm keeping it. The cabber did real well, good to see the money helping the school. Hope you find a deal on the tools you really want when the time's right.
