Update: After having some problems with constipation and a very horrible vet, we had to have Bailey put down. Long sad story. We are all very upset. Rip Bailey- you were a sweet kitty. --------------------------------------- Bailey is still below her ideal weight and not gaining as much as she should. We take turns encouraging her to eat every few hours. Otherwise, she is doing very well. She's very smart, active and curious. I was surprised by how fast, like immediately, she figured out where the cage door is. She cries at the door to be let out when she is awake and runs to it when she knows someone is close. At only 4 weeks old, if that, that's pretty smart. She has started purring, too, which is cute in the extreme. I think she thinks I am mama. She curls up in my shoulder and chin area and purrs. She does little leaps, too. She tried to jump out of a cuddle box yesterday and did a belly flop. She was trying to jump quite a distance to the top. Wishful thinking. She really likes people. I think she will be a sweetie. Feeding time I love her tiny little underbite. Too cute!

She is a cutie and a keeper! The last cat I played surrogate mom to I got at less than a day old. Her momma had abandoned her and a sibling at birth (it didn't make it), I was coerced by the gals in my veterinarians office to save it.
She was fed a commercially available canned liquid milk called KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement - geniuses there in the naming department!) and was fed with a small bottle (also made for that purpose). Available at most pet stores, Walmart, grocery stores and online. Not real expensive, the milk is specially formulated to be what a kitten needs.
She did real well, and thrived. We had her for almost 22 years.

Thank you, Jean rockpickerforever- When my BIL came over to help, he brought some kitten milk, but she took right to eating food. We thought it would be better to go to food. I'm gonna weigh her again tonight and decide if we should add some milk. She is so easily distracted, though- that's the problem. Everything she sees she stops eating to investigate.

Not much of a cat person, I would not worry over the being distracted while eating thing. If the cat was hungry it would not b distracted from food. You are doing OK.

Looks like she is doing just fine. I wouldn't worry much about adding milk

It was just a thought. Whatever you do, don't give her cow's milk, the KMR is much better for kittens. If you do start giving milk by bottle, she will be enthralled with the bottle nipple (substitute mamma). Give her a towel (or you!) to knead on while she suckles, and starts purring. It is such a natural thing. I am not aware of a kitten that was so distracted it wouldn't suckle.
You wouldn't have to do it for very long, quit when it seems she isn't gaining weight, or becoming happy by doing it.
ETA - Give her the bottle in quiet room, without distractions or a bunch of people around.

The weird thing is she has not ever tried to make biscuits or tried to suckle anything. She seems ok with having been weaned. I'll make a milk decision after she is weighed later. We try to weigh her at the same time each time. I may just give her some in a saucer. Kitten milk, I mean. I know about cow's milk. Yes, there is a house full of people perfectly eager to entertain her... and love on her. Both my daughter's were just here to get introduced, too.

Well, adding kitten milk has helped immensely. She put on 100 grams in 3 days. I kid you not. She's a little bundle of sweet kitten joy. I just took these a bit ago. She was absolutely fascinated by DH sharpening his chisels. She was also fascinated by the optivisors.

Thanks for the update and posting the new pictures. I'm not generally a cat person (I'm deathly allergic), but I absolutely adore kittens. They are so curious and so funny, all you can do is laugh.

Funny, I'm not generally a cat person, either. LOL! They are pretty awesome, though. Sorry about the allergies.

Taking her to see the vet today. She has something wrong with one of her eyes. I am hoping she just scratched herself and that it isn't feline aids or leukemia. Just being cautious. We had a litter, years ago, who all contracted aids or leukemia from mama, the carrier. We didn't know, of course. My favorite kitten had a small eye problem. Within a day it popped. Poor thing was miserable. We had it put down. I am just worried about something like that happening. Cats get a lot diseases. She is too young for shots, yet.
