I had a bad flash on this post. First, my eyes are assailed by some strutting rooster that had his legs plucked. And then I read where your new avatar is tumbled rooster GUTS. I misread it the first time.

Me thinks you are gonna have to start keeping thrift store glass purchases under your hat, James. Some things are just better to keep to yourself. Don't ask, don't tell, lol.
Love the new tumbled rooster guts avatar, James.
Don't encourage him jamesp is a grown man full of initiative and ambition. He most certainly needs no encouragement from me, or anybody else, lol. James is gonna do what James is gonna do! And we all get to benefit from it.

The glass is a good winter project rockpickerforever since the rotaries freeze about half the time being outside here. Gotta shut them down constantly which is a pain with clay slurry. The glass shapes quick but if it freezes it gets beat up in a jiffy. As do rocks. The material freezes to the wall of the barrel and exposed material gets brutalized by the unfrozen material on the inside. The vibe heats itself. I increased rotary capacity so shaped rocks can be stockpiled for the vibe and rotaries can be shut off half the year. bigger barrels, bigger speeds, bigger coarse grit has been a great move and time saver. The bigger coarse grit and faster speeds wore out PVC barrels 3X faster. Looks like the cheaper and bigger HDPE barrels are going to last a long time. I only manage the rotaries once a week and that's a big time saver. The bulk silicon carbide is way cheaper and is saving a bunch of money since it works well with higher speeds and bigger barrels. Serious tumblers should convert to this system. Been ball milling the bulk SiC to make SiC ~60 and ~220. Another money saver. The tumbler frame serves well as a ball mill drive.

Gentle rotary tumbling. This sliver of obsidian made it thru the whole glass tumble cycle with out breaking. Even at 63 RPM with big 8 inch barrels and bulk grit. Thanks to 85% fill and cheap pea gravel media. Clay slurry. Or glass microscope slides can be good samplers for conditions in a tumbler, even more sensitive to breakage. It may take an hour getting clay slurry to correct viscosity before letting the rotaries go for a week. Each batch is a bit different. Spin barrel for 10 minutes and re-open, check/adjust slurry as needed. May have to do another adjustment the next day. Once slurry is correct an ear 3 inches from the barrel tells the story, sound is everything. Ear check every 2 to 3 days. Low rumbling sound, NO rattles. With so much fine tuning it makes sense to have bigger barrels as slurry adjustment is tedious.

Had a bad sleep night. Little cut but it was across the bottom of pinky fingernail in cuticle and the nail stopped the glass from going deeper. Sort of a constant bee sting level pain all night. Two thoughts: 1. Leather gloves 2. Saw (Especially since you seem interested in getting pendant shapes)

Two thoughts: 1. Leather gloves 2. Saw (Especially since you seem interested in getting pendant shapes) Leather gloves - mandatory lest you like blood, your own. Little cut left a puddle, dogs trying to lick up blood with glass. Had to put them up. Saw - If you buy medium thickness vases and bowls say 1/4 to 3/8 inch thick your gauge after tumbling is about perfect pendant thickness. Tumbling in separate barrels 3/16 +/-, 1/4 +/- and 3/8 +/- is where I am at now. 3/16" mixed with 3/8" is vanity as the 3/16" about disappears. Lots of weight reduction, gotta stay on the ball and best to pull finished items and replace with fresh. But separating them by thickness helps prevent having to shut down and pick out finished items. Takes me a while to get slurry dialed in each time. Slurry important w/glass. Avoiding saw and grinder work, takes time. All barrels full of mass insanity. Should be a week or two out, anxious to see chaos. Should end up with 30 pounds of chaos. Then to the tiny vibe 2 pounds at a time.

And we all get to benefit from it. I'm just being protective of the expensive glassđŸ˜‚ (glass cop) If that guy at Decatur Glass Blowing when out of business and auctioned his glass work off it would become extinct in about 8 hours, the whole collection. All reduced to 5 gallon buckets. You know I can't resist a millefiori piece regardless of it's origin, nor a multi-color swirl. monotones are safe. Getting a wild hair to hit the thrift stores, may be a bad omen for old glass... And then there is the almighty Scott's antique Market. This weekend, 2nd weekend in the month, both inside and outside. With bad weather. Making it a serious target since the candy asses will not be shopping the yard much making sellers desperate. Resourcefulness may get me in trouble with RMGP. Royal Mounted.......

Ordered 15 pounds to get the price break. I have a microwave kiln, yet to have used it. These beads will certainly be fodder for it. Thanks for the heads up on Fire Mountain. Will take photos of the loot when it gets here. Thinking about the whips and chains motivating/stimulating.

Uh uh, not me! GA is too far to travel to administer punishment, lol.
Besides, that would get me in waaaay too much trouble with mrrockpicker. I can't keep two guys in line. At this stage in the game, way too much trouble to train another one. Celebrating anniversary number 34 next month, on Groundhog's Day.

Yes, I imagine jamesp would love the punishment.
Thanks! They have not all been joyful, but I make the best of what I got, lol. At least we both like rocks, that is a HUGE plus. And he likes to go out rock hounding and exploring with me. How many others can say the same about their spouses? All I have to do is pretend that I am into gold prospecting as much as he is, lol. Just kidding, honey! So far, most of the places we have gone prospecting at have some awesome rocks for backup.

Well, it is on a Friday this year. Maybe go out and try a new Sinaloan style restaurant that is close by. Love me some shrimp Guillermo!! Don't want to have to go south of the border for it.
