Garnet. The color and the especially the little soccer-ball shape are good indicators. Unless its ruby, which I doubt. Garnets are dense. When you pan for gold, they will be one of the last things left in the pan (and little baby magnetites.) Dang, they're pretty.

Garnets -- or I should say the garnet group of minerals -- is among the most varied and chemically complicated stones used for gems. Garnets come in every color and display varied optical effects ranging from color change to asterism to a rare type of schiller effect. Magnetism is a useful method of helping to identify certain garnet species but it's not a test that can be done accurately without some study and preparation. This article is a helpful tutorial on the varied garnet chemistry and it covers garnet magnetism in the link: "How to Use a Magnet." www.gemstonemagnetism.com/template.html

Rhodolite and malaya garnets from Arusha (Umba River valley) can have the same range of colors as yours. You should check each piece under warm incandescent light and then in bright noontime daylight to see if the color in any of the stones changes, as color change and color shift garnets are known from that region. Color change garnets (and color shift garnets, to a lesser degree) tend to be more valuable. If the stones came from another area, then you will need to find what types are found in that region.
