Has anyone tried using tumbled, broken pottery shards as a filler for softer stuff like obsedian, glass, flourite, and etc? I have recently started using 4mm ceramic balls in a lyman vibe and have been getting great results with softer stuff. I imagine they would probably help a great deal in a rotary also. I believe one of the keys to success with soft or sensitive stones is to have them "swimming" in media, and I believe the ceramics are more helpful than plastic beads because of their ability to carry the grit/slurry better. Just my two cents.

Don't fight it anymore, Fossilman. Get that vibe. You'll be so glad you did. I did all my work with a rotary until recently. After a review by Pizzano of the lyman turbo twin vibe, I thought I'd give one a shot. WOW! Not only has it sped up the process, but it is so much more effective and gentler on soft and sensitive stones. I actually have a load of mahogany obsidian in mine running in 500 a/o right now. I still rough grind in my rotaries, but the speed and the shine from the vibe is something to behold.
