3 hours isn't bad and I would love that! "Area 54" is only about an hour from me. Its a quick and easy trip A lot of the same stuff over and over, but still nice to get out. I really want to get to clear creek Going to try a new spot for fishing this weekend. Hopefully, I will have better luck

I'm not against shooting up there...just will have to plan. Hmmm, rockhounding or fishing. Not sure when this might happen, but it's on my list. Just PM me to keep me informed. Hopefullly, we can work something out.

Found it! It was hiding in my daughter's car It's a blueish purple Only reason I saw it was it was sparkling in the sun I vote for blue schiest. Given all the plate tectonics in that area i would not be surprised to find something that got sucked under and forced back up (like all the brecciated stuff in Area 54)

Hey Ali!
Look at "chlorite schist" as a possible for your blue green stuff.
Yes that one green does appear to be actinolite. The other green ones.

You cant walk there without tripping over rocks. I could of easily filled 10 buckets. I was looking for small unique stuff to tumble. Really wanted to find the poppy jasper that's suppose to be there, but dang if I can find any

Glad you got out to hound. Those finds look interesting but no idea on ID's for you, sorry. In that area you can find lots of interesting stuff including the Blue G Lawsonite if I remember correctly but you would know if you have any of that because it is really heavy for it's size. That green one does look like actinolite. You mentioned blue g lawsonite being heavy. Is it possible that is what this is? Rock is very heavy

That doesn't look like any of the "blue G" I've seen. I went there with Kris' and the group several times in the very early going after he discovered it and most the pieces I've seen were rounded cobbles - not unlike a granite landscaping rock. Not all was rounded but you could almost never tell it was blue from the outside until broken open.

BTW, it sounds like we need to do an RTH meetup at Clear Creek soon I've been patiently waiting to see what the government is going to do with the bill that would return the area to the people and put an end to the ridiculous act of having to get multiple permits to enter the area - looks like it's been stalled since last July www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-bill/1913/actions

I am going to take it out Sunday and cut it along with a few others.

Kris's group went out last weekend and some of the stuff they brought back I saw the pictures on Facebook... nice stuff! Rather than going up to the mine I'd probably be more inclined to walk and search the creek for a long time - especially after all the rain we had. Probably some nice stuff peeking it's head out now. We could do both obviously.

I found this info page about the area. Tommy , do you mind doing a quick overview of where a group might go to walk the creek? Seems like the area is pretty diverse. Would we be in the lowlands or going up to higher elevations? I've never been there before, so please excuse the questions.ETA: NVM. I just started searching the site about past trips. I wasn't smart enough to do that first. I do find it interesting there's a mention about an asbestos hazard. Any info about that?

I do find it interesting there's a mention about an asbestos hazard. Any info about that? Well the reason the BLM virtually shut it down for off-roaders is due to asbestos concerns. I don't get into the scientific stuff very often but it really depends on who you ask. I've read stuff on the off-road forums about it being a bunch of crap BLM land grab, over-reaction to the presence of naturally occurring asbestos - and I've also read that the off-roaders digging into the soft soil were the worst offenders - tearing up very fragile hillsides and stirring up a dangerous levels of asbestos into the air. Either way, the BLM designated the area as Serpentine Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) and this encompasses most of the best rockhounding areas. The public is allowed to enter (and rockhound) with permits. One permit is required for each person for each day and humans are only allowed to be inside the area 5 days out of a year. The other permit required is for each vehicle going in. Last time Eva and I went in for three days it cost us about $70 total in permits if I remember right.
