One high end iPad sitting on cookie jar sitting on kitchen counter. Cold beers in reefer to right. Dual photo friendly light sources mounted under kitchen cabinet with happy wife because of increased food prep lighting One nice photo, shopped on large screen and sent to both flickr and iPhoto straight from iPad sitting on cookie jar next to beer over to laptop.

Chuck How do you like that Sony Cybershot? What model is it? Thanks ~Duke I discussed my camera and lighting setup recently in the following thread. Long story short that is an old camera that I have tried to replace several times with much newer and more expensive options. I have always went back to the old model. I even bought the very next version of the same model and did not like the pictures as much. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/84378/lot-batch-8-19Chuck

Chuck, Jugglerguy complained about photo quality from his iPad if I remember correctly. Well, I dismissed his complaints and bought a cheaper 32K memory iPad for my wife and it takes crap photos. The iPad I bought has a totally different camera on it and it takes exceptional photos. It is a 256K iPad. Maybe an iPad Pro ? Whomever's camera they installed in it is amazing.

I actually have an iPad that's one year newer than yours, Jim. It's an iPad Pro (like yours) and they have the same camera as the iPhones. I don't think it's as good as my small point and shoot camera. I don't think I complained. I think I was just trying to figure out how to use it properly. But then again, I could have complained. I agree that it's a pretty good camera, I was just having some trouble doing macro photos, I think.

I agree that it's a pretty good camera, I was just having some trouble doing macro photos, I think. I have tried to see if the Ipad pro's have the same or better camera then the latest Iphones. The specs are very similar. The ipad pro may have the Iphone beat in PPI (pixels per inch). I am using the an Iphone 8 plus right now and the one feature that I do like that it has and the Ipad's do not is that 2X optical zoom. Starting with the Iphone 7 plus they started installing 2 lenses on the front. When shooting normally it uses the 1X lens but you can then zoom to 2X and it uses a completely different lens so there is no digital zoom quality loss. That makes it a bit better at macro shots. It is still not my go to for taking pictures but when I am in a hurry or taking progress pictures of a project it is really convenient. My newer Nikon P900 point and shoot has some neat features that would combine the two. I can have the camera mounted in this stand and have complete control over it from my Ipad or Iphone. I am able to take the pictures and change any settings plus it has an option to download the photo directly to the Ipad each time I take a photo. I have just never been thrilled with the close ups so I use that camera more for outdoor photography with its 83X optical zoom. I just seen the earlier this week that Nikon is releasing the next model. P1000 with a 100X optical zoom. That will take pictures of rocks really far away. Chuck

TheRock - now find a way to stabilize an ultra-zoom camera on there. My kid took a picture of this distant rock last year with no tripod. He had the camera resting on his 4-wheeler. The newer version looks like it is even crazier. Point and shoot camera with no lens swapping. Who would have ever guessed. It is not a pocket size point and shoot though Chuck

I never got past the price tag of mirrorless to actually check out the specs. They must be good for something at the prices they go for. Maybe they are getting cheaper now that they have been out for awhile but last time I looked at middle of the road Sony models they were about $800-$1000 without a lens. Chuck

My wife and I LOVE our mirrorless camera. Much more compact and still tons of options for lenses (sky is the limit on what you want to spend here). I'd recommend the sony Alpha for sure.

My dad got into one a few years ago. He's gone from manual SLR , DSLR, and now to the mirrorless. It feels kind of funny writing about "dad" related to my age, but he's 82 and loves photography as much as he had years ago. I've never critiqued his work, but he loves shooting in RAW and doing post processing. Image quality is supposedly superb, and he has no regrets whatsoever in making the switch. The biggest advantage for him is having a body that is more compact with additional lenses that also don't take up as much room. He travels with it often, as he and mom are doing at least two cruises a year...in addition to whatever local work he is doing. Unless there are other benefits I'm not aware of, I think the big advantage for mirrorless is the small(er) size when compared to DLSR. I don't know, or a least I'd research, image quality of a full frame DLSR v. a mirrorless. If size isn't an issue, image quality and cost of the lenses will be. As mentioned, they are not cheap. However, it sounds like you get what you pay for. I think my dad is using a Sony, though I can't say for sure. I'll check with him tomorrow to see what he's using, and I'll pass it along. For me, I can't help. I'm still using a DLSR.

Chuck Dave saxplayerI have not done much research. I had 3 camera savvy kids discuss them with me on a quiet day at Best Buys. They said Sony is the pioneer and suggested Sony on both price point and performance. They said the same technology is #1 in the film/movie industry and Sony makes about all the cameras used in that industry. They said it will be the new camera. Small, small lenses that perform as well or better. Small for the reasons Dave mentioned, mainly the shuttering system. Something about the electronic sensor being larger and and receiving more image from the lens. And the digital sensor being completely revamped. I know they were having issues with 25M cameras as opposed to 6M and 12M cameras related to too many pixels per unit of area on the digital sensor. The pixels were bleeding into each other. Somehow this system allows many time more pixels at the sensor without having them overly compressed together. They said the price is starting to drop. My DSLR is a 2006 model and it is time. Next will be a middle grade shutterless purchase based on blind faith. Will look into Sony Alpha saxplayer, thanks. Thanks for the retorts.

I still have the very first consumer market digital camera that reached 1 megapixel. Paid over a grand for that one and have had at least a dozen since then. Still have most of them due to horrible resale value. Only 9 years before your 2006 DSLR. This was my first in 1997. 20 years later and I can take closeups of the moon with a $600 point and shoot camera. Chuck

Jim, I bought the Sony alpha-6 - 5 years ago - when it was *really* new compared to 2018 I love it. Nice and compact and the sensor on the newer alpha line is amazing. You can spend the $$$ for the lenses as you choose and the sky is the limit. I love our camera but more importantly so does my wife. It is about 40-50% less room than a DSLR usually. Grant

AWESOME Thanks- I really wanted the one that came out right before that one but the guy at the camera shop told me to wait because the 1 mega pixel camera would be out soon and it would be way better. Here is a picture of the previous model. Nice memory card eh? Chuck

I still have a 1997 Sony Mavica Very cool. Does yours still work? I lost the charging cord to mine. Floppy disc version right? I remember those as well. 1.4 meg of high quality photography. My first kid was born the year I got my 1 megapixel camera so I have thousands of pictures saved from back then. I can remember how thrilled we were to be able to take pictures and not have to get them developed. edit: I see the floppy disc sticker on it now. Chuck
