Agree on the monitors. When I looked at the photo I posted, the red colors were identical to yours. Yours do appear a little darker, more like grape juice in places. I could not see anything that resembled garnet. Your shapes do appear more like garnet to me, as they do not have the obvious crystal structure of Amethyst. But, I collected some specimens from the Amethyst mine that had really been roughed up by the mining process. They lacked all evidence of being a crystal and reminded me more of rough quartz. A lot depends on how a person has their monitor set. Many set their monitors to correspond to how their photos appear on it. Everyone's camera's and editing are different. I remember that you use Flickr as a host, as do I.
I love this mystery you presented. Hopeing that it ends with a positive ID.

Thanks for your 2 cents, rockjunquie . It's funny, the photos I posted are a perfect color match, in both my camera and on my computer monitor (and cell phone) to the rock in hand. It really is grape popsicle purple, lol.
I think the differing perspectives people are seeing are due to differing monitors on their end.
Weather cold (65° lol) here and we will probably be getting more rain today. Had a bit of thunder and lightning around 8:30 last night. We only had a little bit of rain overnight, but Ocotillo Wells had over 1 1/2 inches! I can just hear all the desert plants sucking up the water (first real rain in I don't know how long, many months at the least) and going, "Ahhhhhhh!" Also thinking of the delicious smell of a wet desert. Was going to say envisioning it, but that's not quite right when talking about a smell. Well, I'm sure you get what I am talking about.
I want to go out and dissect this rock, but DH is sick in bed sleeping , so don't want to be making a lot of noise right now. Maybe I can do it quietly, without use of power tools? Will do what I can. I know you guys are all dying to see what it is, so am I! Why not envision a smell? Nothing wrong with a little synesthesia.
And.. a beautiful stone, whatever it turns out to be.

Thanks, Stephan. Envision, like picture this in your mind, just didn't seem the right term, lol. But I'll buy that. I was able to take loose one of the blueberries, using some sharp new carbide tile nippers. Quiet, too. Took a few photos with a new toy I got. Sort of a camera/microscope. Still trying to get it dialed in. Here's the pics, in no particular order, 'cause I can't see to much to post them on my phone Yes, I said it was purple! Several of these photos taken holding it between my thumb and forefinger. White on left is my thumbnail. Some faces and angles. This last one is a dragonfly close-up in my yard. Trying to get familiar with the camera.

Interesting, but still not seeing any definite terminations or complete faces. Might be time to take that small piece and do some scratch tests. Tourmaline and garnet will scratch quartz and ruby will scratch tourmaline and garnet (tourmaline being slightly harder than garnet, but not as tough). Dragonfly is softest of all, but you already knew that

I'm still saying it's Garnets. The description of them as blueberries is really telling, that's the shape of Garnet crystals, even when you can't see any faces they still come out looking like balls. Another tell is the fractures and cleavage planes showing in those pictures, very typical of Garnet. Great job on those pictures.
