Easier to state least favorite—- hematite! Black everywhere. It turns out that marcasite is even worse than hematite. Unbelievable mess.

I’ve never worked with psilomelane (ha ha, autocorrect wanted to turn that into psilocybin), so I can’t say. As for the marcasite, I just made a cab that has gorgeous breciated marcasite floating in clear agate, with a few ghostly fortifications. Beautiful. But worth the mess? I’m still deciding. 😂

Psilomelane is a big part of the reason I have a 1 wheel Graves Cabmate on my bench to do most of the shaping before I go to the Genie, also one of the materials I remember to wear gloves with. It can be worth it though.

It seems everyone left out howardite. If I ever find some to try I will let you know I like it or not.

Yeah, Howardite! Haven't seen any of that rough in a few years now.
Including a couple of pics for those who might have never seen it cabbed. This one had giraffes in it, and found a new home.
If anyone stumbles across any of this at an estate sale, snap it up. There will always be buyers for it if you don't like it.

Here's my last little slab of the original Howardite. I can't decide whether to cut it or leave it as-is. The new stuff doesn't look quite the same.

Jeffery Hill He has been a friend and a vendor at the club's show for several years, one of my personal favorites. Another cab artist I know will be sharing space with him at Q-site, and has dug with him at the claim. I understand that what they're pulling out is mostly different from the original stuff but is still very nice.

Wow! If that was mine, I'd leave it. That is amazing.

Easier to state least favorite—- hematite! Black everywhere. If you want black everywhere I would suggest Iron Pyrite in Quartz, beautiful when done, god-awful too work with!!! It is also 1 of my faves too, guess I am a glutton for punishment!! Iron pyrite in quartz, Obsidian (preferably lace & mahogany), Jasper in general & Botswana agates have been a recent fave too Any rock I cut cut is good for me !!!!

Petrified wood? Jasp-agate? It's Howardite from the old-time deposit. It used to be called Plaid Agate and another name is Rattlesnake Agate. I've never run across a definitive explanation of how it was deposited. My own theory is that it was created in a hydrothermal environment and the pattern is due to pulsating waters carrying various metal salts that colored it. I could definitely be wrong.

Last Howardite post from me, since we pretty much hijacked the thread here for a while.
The newer stuff with the smaller, tighter pattern had been called Royal Flamingo for the past few years. I'm glad Jeffrey found this stuff, 'cuz we know him too and he's a good guy.
I'd always heard Howardite is common opal in volcanic ash tuff. Never seen any definitive documentation on that... .

There is very little info on the site. All they say is from Northern Nevada. I did some more investigation and I think I know where the general locality is and from my understanding there is no active claim on the original site so I have been thinking about making a little trip to the area to look around since I go right by there several times a year. Been looking for a particular agate in the area though that so far I only found one tiny piece. So I have not checked out the area where I think the howardite is. Maybe in the spring when it is a bit warmer and there is more daylight.
