Took a break from the others to start a piece that Robin and Vince sent me. It's been windowed so we know there is color. Let's see if I manage to screw it up You are not going to screw it up.
Just keep doing what you've been doing and all will be well!

It's already popping.
I had to stop when my daughter got home. The noise triggers her anxiety for some reason

Oh good!
ETA - the popping, not your daughter part. Maybe the noise reminds her of the dentist?

Alright I think I'm done grinding away. Now to polish it I have not touched the bottom and it is really crumbly Should I do that 1st, and then polish?

I think I would. That way you won't mess up anything you already polished by accident and have to re-polish.
I'll wait for the FA experts to chime in.

I'm in a bit late on this but I always do the backs last to best orient the face color. I don't think pushing your cut further on this stone is wise. You've already cut through a couple of bubbles and you're lucky there was color instead of brown chalcedony beneath the layer you sanded away. Unfortunately it's not as nice/bright a color as the one's you've already revealed so if it were me I'd leave well enough alone.
You're catching on very quickly and you did a great job of cutting to the color. FA is really challenging and one's learning curve is challenged by every new stone you cut, though the basic principles remain the same. Good job!

Ok, Ali, gemfeller has spoken! No more pushing on this one.
I would have blasted right through the color already. LOL!
ETA: Maybe you shouldn't listen to me about fire agate. Since I've never cut it, I am clueless. I haven't picked out a piece to try yet, but I will. I have to finish a pendant I'm in the middle of, which I may or may not kill because I'm doing something I've never tried before and try carving an opal I started to cut that has color bars diving all over the dang place.

That's how you learn. I've ruined many a stone by pushing too far; I've also been richly rewarded now and then with much brighter and better colors. With experience you sort've learn to "read" the color layers but I've often been fooled. It seems to me there's always a bit of luck and serendipity involved.
