Thanks all! Mystery solved then, Chert nodule!
I find a lot of Chert. It's pretty much all over the place here in the desert. But not nodules of it. This would likely be a first for me. The location that I found it at is not tread upon very often. I will have to go back out there to see how many more I can get.
I appreciate the feedback. I would have been stumped forever.

Just in case someone is still following this "Chert Nodule" mystery.
I submerged 1/2 of the rock in Vinegar. I wasn't sure how long to leave it in there. It didn't seem to be doing anything right away. after a couple of hours I came back to the rock and it was unchanged. So the Vinegar had no effect on any of the layers.
I was expecting it to fizzle or bubble a bit, based on what I read. But it didn't do that.
So it looks like a multicolored Chert nodule.
Thanks to all for your help. Now I want to go back and find more of them maybe at the same odd location.
