I didn't reply to the obvious ones to give others a chance. Yeah, one guy is way off. Are you gonna post the names on screen at any point? I don't think there's a way to go back to edit a video after it's already been posted, but I could be wrong. I really don't know all the names for sure, but I'm getting some good ideas. I suggest making a video of the answers and post that. Then concatenate the two previously posted videos and post again. Voila, 3 videos for your channel. I am jealous of your new editing software. I am still using iMovie. I figure that I still need to work on my camera skills, before I worry too much about editing. LOL

I suppose that one could be Royal Imperial but it sure reminded me of Willow Creek. Yes, Imperial jasper and Willow Creek can share some similar colors. I'd put it as the Imperial Spiderweb type, with the reds and pinks a bit more intense and just a touch of lavender rather than a more orange-brown undertone in Willow Creek. I should have Imperial Spiderweb cabs somewhere, but cannot get to where they'd be lurking now, but here is a blurry pic of old piece:

I think I'll do that if I can figure out what everything here is. I was able to get Final Cut Pro plus four other programs, including Motion, for $200 as a teacher. I figured I should do that before I retire and if I'm going to do it eventually, why not now? My biggest reason for wanting to upgrade is to straighten horizon lines. I'll be taking a lot of beach videos and I can't seem to hold my GoPro straight. Video taken over water is not forgiving. iMovie has no straightening tools, but I did see a video showing how to open the video in Keynote, straighten it there, and then open it in iMovie. That works, but is a pain. There's also a $50 plugin for FCP that will automatically straighten the whole video. I haven't bought that yet, but I might. When I pan a water shot, I tend to tilt one way at the beginning and the opposite way at the end. It takes a lot of fiddling around in FCP to fix that, so auto straightening would be nice. Of course, learning to use my camera would be another way to go!

I have a proprietary steadicam handgrip that I can mount my drone camera to, and it is really neat. Horizon is perfect no matter how I move the camera, and there is no shaking whatsoever. With the hardware, you not only get the benefit of level horizons, but any shaking is completely eliminated. Panning becomes smooth and easy, and there's no bouncing while walking. I did a quick search on the 'net, and it seems there are a few products and good info available to do research.

The GoPro Hero 7 Black (my camera) has really good stabilization. I mounted it to my Jeep’s windshield and drove down about the bumpiest road around here and the video was very smooth. I’m sure a gimbal would be even better, but this is already really good. Gimbals are not super cheap and I already spent way more on GoPro accessories than I wanted to. I realize that Final Cut Pro was expensive too, but it does more than stabilize my shots. The other thing I was worried about was how difficult it would be going from level, stabilized shots to shots of the ground to shots under water or where there is danger of dropping the camera in the water.. I have never used a gimbal so I don’t know how easy it is to quickly go from level to shooting the ground. I do that constantly while walking a beach.

I think I could stare at that Imperial jasper for hours - probably not a good use of time, but it really sparks the imagination! Me to!

I didn't think about that, and I don't have a good answer for the GoPro related equipment. On mine, however, I can aim the camera up or down with the push of a button in the direction I want the camera to move. But, I get the cost thing, too.

I have considered getting a drone, but all the laws seem like a pain in the butt. There’s an airport near here, so I couldn’t fly it in most places I go to hunt rocks.

I've had it about 3 years, but I don't fly it as often as I used to. I've got to get mine back up in the air again. Being that you have an airport nearby, that's not necessarily a deal breaker. Check out this blog article: uavcoach.com/controlled-airspace/There's probably more to worry about with local ordinances, but if you're a recreational flyer, you're not subject to all of the regs that a commercial flyer must follow. Since they fly for profit, they need to be licensed. If you have more questions, drop me a line via PM. NevadaBill is also big into drones.

If I post on youtube and make money there, does that make me a commercial flier? I would have originally thought, "no," but that answer is seemingly wrong. I had to spend some time looking around, but it seems that most of the opinions I've seen indicate that drone footage used in a monetized video qualifies as "commercial purposes." All that means, however, is all you would need is a remote pilot's license, which means you are a "part 107" flyer. This video offers a pretty good explanation.

I just watched it. You've confirmed my decision to just say "no" to drones. Even if I got licensed, the laws could change at any time. I'm actually glad there are laws, because I could see how those things could be really annoying or dangerous. It just seems like more trouble than it's worth. Did you watch my El Cajon Bay video? I have fake drone footage in that. It didn't do what I wanted it to do, but it's there. I hauled a 24 foot pole through the woods (thick woods) and put my GoPro up on it for an arial shot of the bay. I did the same thing in my yard and showed my son and some of my students and they all thought it was from a drone. I can't do anything but "hover" in one spot or go higher than 24 feet, or be in the shot, but it's something and it's free. Ok, that was a lot of downsides, but that's where I am for now.

To be honest, I hadn't seen that vid yet. I'll have to take a look. If you have found a way to fake drone footage, my hat is off to you. The drone is a neat piece of equipment, and the video can be stunning. But, if that's not in your wheelhouse, it is what it is. I still enjoy your stuff, so good luck in keeping things going.

Beautiful rocks! The bottom pic (#16 from the video) is the winner for me, bright orange is always yummy, maybe carnelian? I think @drummond Island Rocks is on to something with #2 in the video (#9 pic) being obsidian, but I didn't see any sheen. It looks like a busy piece of midnight lace obsidian to me. I'm pretty sure the last one is glass, not rock. jamesp could tell us for sure. Color and pattern looks like glass Rob. Beautiful batch of fine materials, real eye candy.

Rob, once again you produce another stunning batch of beauties that I could only dream about. And the photography is great too! I would like to pick a favorite (maybe the banded Agates), but these are such a diverse group of stones that they look stunning all together in the group photo. Some day. I am not sure how the discussion shifted to drones (as I was tagged by aDave), but I can say that I have many years of building and flying drones at all levels (except perhaps for industrial use). If you drop me a PM, I can happily answer most of your questions. These days it is so cheap and easy to get in to the hobby. And some of the newer DJI offerings are fool proof to boot. I doubt you need a drone to produce rocks this beautiful though! I can't wait to see your next batch. Thanks for sharing!

For right now, I’m still resisting the desire to get one.
