Welcome Elitami from Waterloo Iowa ! We look forward to seeing some of your carvings, they sound very interesting as we haven't had the opportunity to see any artwork using that media ! Can you possibly give some details as to how it is done ?

I have been working with shell since I was little making thing out of them. Later I studied under Knokovtee Scott a Cherokee National Treasure for shell carving. The pink/purple shell work you see is a local mussel shell Called Mankiller Pearl Shell named after former Chief Wilma Mankiller ᏥᎨᏒᎢ. It is becoming hard to find due to pollution run off. The other shells are local Shells as well. I have my own names for them but I think thats just me lol.
This is a example of the Shell in the raw
When working Shell you have to be Careful, never work it dry the dust Has a neurotoxin in it. It will also cake up in your lungs Which can cause pneumonia as well as other health problems. Always wear a breathing protection. This is what brought me to this Forum. I’m Working on building my own lapidary machine and so far I’ve gotten a lot of good ideas and a lot of good help ᎢᏨᎵᎡᎵᏨᏏ (I appreciate all of you). below is some of the work I’ve done it’s not all of it but it’s a good representation of what I do.
ᏩᏙ (Thank you)
This is a earring and necklace set I made for trade for a hand woven belt.I just got done making this set of earrings. I made this gorget set for a Coworker. I call this type of Shell ᏖᎵᏙᏳᏍᏗ (like a plate) These earrings I made for my Wife they are made from a mussel commonly known as three ridge shell. I call it ᎣᏓᎵ (Mountain) Some buttons I made for a Good friend that’s a Seamstress that’s a Cherokee National Treasure. (Hoping to see them on a art piece) This is my Personal Gorget I made that’s based off some old Gorgets that our ancestors made and wore. This is the First Gorget I made. These were made as a gift for a birthday

Wow your work is amazing! I should show you a piece of shell that I've been hanging on to - my wife has always wanted it as a pendant from the day we found it on a California beach but I have no idea what to do with it.

Great looking works, I may try to work some shell from the Mississippi River. We find quite a few washed up on the sand bar turns on the main channel .

Is there anything in particular you’re asking about? I’m curious about the tools you use to carve them and how you polish them. First I cut out basic shapes I want with a wet saw. Then use a lapidary machine to do the basic shaping. Then use things like Scribes to scratch in the lines. Jeweler saw to do cut outs. Needle files to do fine detail work (as well as scratch in lines). Various wet dry sandpapers up to 400 grit to get it ready to buff. And I use a Buffing compound called Fabulustre to put a good shine on it. However, you have to make sure not to over heat it and burn the shell so keep water near by. You can use high grit sandpaper like 10,000 grit but much more work.

Awesome stuff. Thanks so much for the details. I’m looking forward to seeing your future projects. I’ll be thinking twice now, when I see sea shells down by the seashore.

I haven’t messed with to many sea shells but from the few I have they seem to be less stable and harder to work with.Besides your mother of pearl type or abalone. I would really like to get my hands on some black lipped pearl I think that’s what it’s called.
