Right on jase
Very good !
I’d like to think we could all agree with your analysis
Butte people are pretty tweaked
I’m not sure what happened
What the trial was all about?
Athens really destroyed itself in short period of time
As to Socrates he got caught up in the politics
of what was the end the end of the war with Sparta.
That was really nasty
Alcibiades was one of Socrates student
A very charismatic controversial historical person in that melee
He rallied the Athenian to wage a battle with Syracuse
He would be the general and lead the ships into battle
In the idea that it would help defeat Sparta
Good luck with that
Well that battle at sea turned out to be a disaster for the Athenian
Plus Alcibiades was being called back to Athens
to stand trial for dishonoring the religious rites.
It seems the night before he left for the Syracuse in full honor
Some drunken youths had went through the city
& destroyed Hermes statues
sacrilege!
Anyway we all can understand how convoluted and complicated
this fascinating tale is getting.
I can’t untie it. Butte it looks a lot like present day
Anyway as the tale goes Alcibiades didn’t go back to stand trial.
He defected to the Spartans !
A very un-socratic thing to do !
And then like 5 years later Alcibiades comes back to Athens to rally them again. Butte Athens was on its knees by then.
The democracy was finished Alcibiades dies or is assassinated but he to is finished
the Spartans back the Tyranny of the 30 and takes over Athens
Many of these 30 were associates of Socrates
They were a brutal undemocratic authoritarian governing force
Or maybe they were the good guys?
Butte I wouldn’t fly a ‘democracy first' flag
Anyway a short time later the democrats came back
in a bloody civil sort of way
In their ‘hoi poi' power grab they were going to right-- wrongs
civilly
Somehow Socrates got implicated w/ the Tyranny of 30
It very convoluted,
The Athenians
(whoever they were or how we define them)
screwed up big time
You could speak freely in Athens
They even encouraged it
Yet you were held responsible for your speech
What ever responsible mean?
I needed a diversion…..
