Hey James and Lee, Thanks for the compliments! There were some very tricky welds, so I'm glad they look good (at least from a distance).
James... yes, those holes were a major PITA!
Lee... Great idea about the bushings. Too late for this project, but when I do a redesign and build a new saw, I'll do that.

Hi Everybody, Several months ago I decided that I wanted to make a slab saw. I did my research, bought some plans off of Ebay, started accumulating tools, then 3 1/2 weeks ago I decided I was ready and purchased the steel that I would need. I still have a ways to go, but I'm tantalizingly close, and wanted to share my progress so far. Oh, by the way, I apologize for my lack of camera skills. If anybody wants to see close-ups of specific items, let me know. Also, I will be posting updates as I get closer to completion. Thanks for looking! Some raw materials... Box primed and ready for paint (almost) Vice carriage bottom Vice bottom (except for hardware to allow movement) Vice bottom mounted on carriage, in turn mounted on carriage rails (as a test to make sure that the vice would move smoothly on the rails) Vice coming together now... And vice all together (only part of the carriage not installed in this picture is the feed jaw and separator, which I'll finish up tomorrow) Tomorrow I will finish the last bit of work on the feed jaw and separator, then cut the carriage rods to size (so that they will fit in the tank), then paint the carriage.

Could you change the names to white ? They're impossible to read against the blue background. I changed them to a lighter blue, instead of the near-black that they were before.

According to this, Turnedstone is next. I took the liberty of removing the huge font sizes. Round 6 of the " Sisterhood/Brotherhood of the Traveling Rock Box". The traveling rock box is rolling once again! This the official sign-up and discussion thread for the fifth round under my administration. If you're reading this and wondering what the heck I'm talking about, chances are you're newer here or have been in some highly remote agate quarry in Patagonia for the last few years so you will need to do some catching up... Since I can't find the original post..........this is how the box works. I will send out a box with rough, slabs, cabs, findings and anything lapidary related. When you get the box, you take a little out and replace it with something of your own and send it on to the next person. If you see a larger chunk of rough you like, you may cut a slab off then put the remaining chunk in for the next person. If there are findings, take a few and leave some for the next and so on. The box goes from member to member until it arrives back to me at the end. I then take names again for the next round. To be fair to everyone, I draw names of the 20 that sign up so everyone has a fair chance! *****NOTE***** There will be an envelope in the box for overseas shipping. If you can spare a couple of dollars, please put it in the envelope! This round is going to work pretty much the same way as before. If you have any questions make sure to ask before signing up! By requesting to participate you have have contended to understand and agree to the obligations & responsibilities you will have as a participant. If you would like to participate, all you have to do is post to this topic with your intent to become a recipient. The first 20 to sign up will be in this round!! Please be swift with your handling of the box, there are many excited recepients on the list! Send a PM to the next person on the list for their mailing address. So with all the obligatory preamble out of the way... Here is the recipient list for this round: (The legend at the bottom explains the recipient # color coding.) __________________________________________________ RockHobbit - Wickenburg, AZShotgunner TurnedstoneMike Menzie

I think it is confusing having 2 different threads... one for the signup and one for the actual traveling rock box. Since the round has started, I suggest all posts related to Round 6 (after this one) go to the Round 6 thread, instead of the signup thread.

The U.S. has dropped the precondition that the Taliban renounce Al Qaeda. That is now a "negotiation objective" for the talks.

Hi Everybody, As requested I am posting some pictures of the rocks I got. I apologize for the poor picture quality, photography isn't my strong suit. Jafar Jasper (Dry) Labradorite (Wet) Polychrome Jasper (Dry) And a bonus rock that they sent me for free (without intending to, apparently... score for me!) (Kambaba Jasper) Thanks for looking! Jefff

I placed a fairly large order with them, and they shipped it out same day. (Well, they had shipping info the same day, I imagine USPS picked it up the following day.) I should be picking it up from the post office today. I couldn't be happier with the service...
Rachel (who helped me), was very patient, and sorted through their piles of rock to help me find exactly what I was looking for... took pictures with measurements, weights, the works. I'm very eager to get my hands on the rough and start playing with it. :-D
