I'd toss it in there. Only one way to learn, correct? Give it a try, I would. I've tumbled uglier stuff than that especially starting out. Sometimes they'll surprise you, sometimes you get colorful driveway gravel.

Those are great. I have some in coarse right now, hopefully they'll come out half that nice.

We've been doing a little more exploring around here. Thought I'd toss up a few pictures just for kicks. From about three weeks ago. Just out for a drive at about 9100 ft.
Wasn't sure what we might find there. Not a lot, but did find some interesting calcite at an old prospect pit. Last weekend we went off wandering around again. Checked on a couple of places I'd seen obscure references to, but had no real directions or anything. One of the roads we went down.
Found a little interesting stuff.
Spent too much time driving trying to figure out how to get where we wanted to be. Found some decent jasper and usable chalcedony as well.
Probably try to get back over there, maybe before the snow flies. It was warm - 90+ - but beats the heck out of working, eh?
Have a great day.

Ha ha, been active all right-just too active to spend much time on the computer. That picture is actually one of the better parts of the road. Eventually it was washed out about 6' deep, had to turn around and go back the way we came. Nice drive, got a little more pin striping. We don't beat the snot out of the thing, but we bought it to use, not run to the mall. Hope all are doing well. Russ
Hiya, Russ! That's okay that you're not spending time on the computer, better that you are out having fun! Good thing you've got that little vehicle, we wouldn't have been able to turn our big ass truck around, would have had to back up to get out of there! We have not been out for some time. Bob became disabled and had to quit working in December. The truck has only gone about 50 miles since then. He will not be able to go back to work again, but hoping at some point, we can at least get out to the desert for some rock picking. He's not real mobile now, using a walker to get around. Hope you are able to keep exploring and rock picking for a long while. Just check in every so often when you can. Stay well. Oh heck, I didn't know that. So sorry to hear it, tell him we'll be thinking of him. You all take care.

Very lucky finds plus a pretty spoon to stir your coffee! I bet some kid long ago got his butt whooped for losing Mama's spoon!

Looks like you are definitely keeping busy. Some interesting stuff, Russ nowyo . Brings a new meaning to the term "yard rocks." I guess one uses what one has on hand for fill. The last rock before the spoon looks like actinolite. Wonder if the previous owner buried more rocks in the yard? Hi Jean. Yup, that's actinolite, there were actually several nice pieces. As an aside, a couple of weeks ago on one of our exploring trips I found a couple of small pieces of tremolite, which as you know is part of the same series. Pretty sure there is more stuff in there and I'll probably go digging again when I get some other stuff done.

Blasts from the past. Yeah, I made a propane tank tumbler, standard 5 gallon tank. Cut a hole in the top, welded on about 2.5 inches of inch Sched 40 pipe, used rubber cap. Worked fine, but it was loud. At our place in Wyoming it wasn't a problem but here in Nevada we have actual neighbors, most of the doing shift work. The original barrel lasted almost two years before it started wearing through running nothing but 36 grit. Made another barrel, and still have it. Really about as cheap and easy a way to make barrels as there is. On the original I welded two pieces of 3/8 rod inside at 180 degrees for kickers, on the second barrel I left those out. No difference in performance, wouldn't bother with them. Sure could get a bunch of rocks through coarse to keep things moving along. Russ You mentioned that you used the propane tank tumbler to move rocks through the coarse stage. Did you use it do the following stages, or after coarse move the rocks to a different, maybe more conventional smaller tumbler? Henry Only used the propane tank tumbler for coarse grit. My process at that time was coarse in the big tumbler, 120/220 in the QT-6, prepolish and polish in the 45C. That kept things moving along real nice.
I also built a couple of 6" PVC barrels which worked real well. Still have them, need to modify things a little to fit the current space I have.

Sort of. One of my projects around here this spring was building a retaining wall between the garage and the alley. There was sort of a wall there but it was in pretty bad shape. A new wall would let me get things squared up and leveled a little, making the area more usable and creating more parking space. Anyhow, tore out the old wall and dug things back to get the new wall built. This is some of the stuff I found that had been used for fill. Never know what you'll find out there. Have a great day.

That looks like more of a donkey trail than a road! At least you have a more appropriated sized vehicle to drive down it than we do...
Good to see you getting more active, Russ!
