Because I live here, and I have lived in the midwest my whole life. (Except for some globetrotting with Uncle Sam) With some investigation I trust you will find the term came from pioneer times. It wasn't the wild wild west, but sure wasn't the east.

Silica is bad to breathe. Those little pieces of grit you inhale get trapped in your lungs. There they cut and continue to cut your lungs. Then your body forms scar tissue. And the silica keeps cutting and the scar tissue keeps forming. Its called silicosis. It kills people. To be sure, the level of exposure one gets from pouring grit into different containers likely may not be enough to probably not kill you, perhaps. The dust left behind may be stirred up and get into a child's lungs. And they too, will likely not die from silica exposure, maybe.
Transfer grit outside. Stay up wind. MiOSHA (mine safety) would likely have your wearing a P-99 filter on a half face respirator. Do not make the little ones in your life ill. A paper dust mask does not offer much protection.

My wife makes me enjoy waterfalls. We have a Michigan DeLorme atlas all marked up with times and dates of visits. If the falls lack signage, she will take an image of the page prior to visiting the falls. All her images of water falls are preceded by an image identifying the falls.
The falls will be roaring come Thursday/Friday. Time to do a little fishing.

Snow today, hail yesterday, gone tomorrow. Maybe if I cap it, I could sell it to Hollywood. Some kind of horror picture title

Ontonagon is part of the 'West end'. My camp is over there. I am in Negaunee. Just up the hill from Marquette. If you check weather in Marquette, you are really getting the Negaunee weather. The NWS place is a couple of miles from hear.

"Whether the weather be cold, or whether the weather be hot, We'll weather the weather, what ever the weather. Whether we like it or not!
We (central UP of Michigan) are weathering some of the most interesting I believe I have ever seen.
Yesterday, predawn, we had straight line winds at 70 mph, 80 SW of us. It actually shook my house enough that I felt it in bed. No power all day. Trees, power lines and poles, lots of billboards and signs sent to the ground. This morning there is 6 inches or so of snow on the ground. Tomorrow supposed to be in the 50's. I think I will like tomorrow. Although, I did stick my head outside to take an image of my wife shoveling snow. Surgery recovery prevents me from doing much more than speaking encouraging words. I find I am gifted at speaking encouraging words.
At least it keeps the bugs at bay. The weather, encouraging or discouraging words have no effect on bugs. Trust me on that one.

Oil, suntan oil. I doubt there is much of an SPF factor. We go to a dollar store and buy it. The boat is under snow right now so I cannot see the brand name. Just cheap suntan oil.

Agate finding tips;
Do not expect to see on the beach what you see in the shops.
The Feds are pretty protective of 'their' rocks. That being inside the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Expect someone will be watching you pick up and pocket stones and call in the Federal Rangers. They will ruin your day and maybe your vacation, depending on your ability to deal with zealots.
Look fast and travel far in the morning and evening. Head into the sun. Agates 'glow' when the sun is low.
Most agates are not well rounded. They are hard with corners, not well rounded.
Look closely at the ugly rocks. If all you do is look for pretty stones, I could walk behind you and pick up an agate that you stepped over or on.
There are no beaches on Lake Superior that I have been to, I have been to a bunch, that agates are plentiful. The best agate picking is in the Arrowhead region of Minnesota and south. In gravel pits.
Scour the beach for agates, have a good time. Please don't let your lack of success tarnish your visit. Do the sunrise and sunsets. Visit waterfalls. Many beaches allow fires on the beach, be careful many rocks will explode if heated by fire, build on sand. Nothing like a beach fire after sunset.
The stable flies can be relentless in early July. Lay a heavy coat of suntan oil on. They won't bite through it. Heavy and OIL, not lotion. They are an export of the manure piles of Wisconsin.
