I only cut a couple of slices off of this tonight. The saw looked like I'd butchered a pig in it. There was a crazy amount of red dye/dirt running through the oil.

Nice!! I try to keep my ABV @ 13-14% unless it's something sweet. If residual sugar is 1.02 or above, I shoot for 16% and above, just to offset. This particular one is made with my favorite honey, Yaupon Holly. I've got about 8 different batches going right now though, including one traditional made with meadowfoam. It's already amazing so I can't wait to taste it in a few months. My last big planned batch for this year is going to be a 6 gallon batch made with about 25 lbs of frozen figs. Probably going to use huajillo honey for it. It's light and mild and easy to get my hands on down here. I see your location is up in Colorado. Have you had a chance to get your hands on some Fireweed honey? What's the taste profile on the Yaupon> Not familiar with it. Do know the Guajillo. On my stuff I want the alcohol base to maintain the strongest presence. 8 batches?? Sounds like me.. Stuff everywhere and rocks interspersed. We got fireweed grin but not what you were thinking.. hehehe Yeah Im done for the year unless I get foolish and make an apple and a skeeter pee wine. Selling plants, rounding up some rocks, learning things on here. It s relief when you get over for the year. Put out 20 cases of wine from fruit from my yard. Wine made, Black Cherry, Peach, plum, margarita one with lemon and lime juices and an artificial tequila flavor generally used more for neutral spirits. Rock on little sister
Yaupon honey has a spicy woody flavor. In this house, it's only second to Buckwheat honey on biscuits. It's probably my favorite strongly flavored honey for mead. I've got one I make every fall using it that has apple cider, cranberry juice, and nutmeg. I'll have to send you a bottle of it next time. I do use guajillo honey pretty regularly as well. My very first traditional was made using it. It's pretty cool to share multiple hobbies with people. Thanks for sharing!

Please show us the slabs once you get it cut? I bought that one way back when thinking it was gonna be one of those killer design rocks... I don't think you can get that rock with the black lines anymore... I had it out for about an hour last night, turning it this way and that, deciding where my first cuts are gonna be. I'll be cutting it tomorrow night and hopefully will get some photos posted on Tuesday.

Gorgeous rock chunk is courtesy of phil . I made the mead and aged it in a whiskey barrel. Two of my favorite things. I can't wait to get this rock into the saw and start slabbing it. It's gonna give me some killer slabs.

Holy Hannah! I haven't cut any of mine yet. I hope it's at least that good! Also, what kind of saw is that? It's the cleanest one I've seen in a long time!

I had assumed you were Jett, bay maybe Jaye. I had more come from Alex today, but just stuff from Last Sunday. No parcelas. Yep. Everyone's nickname for me is either Bird (jayebird) or Jet (jaye jaye jet plane).

The red is really cool. It looks a little like poppy jasper.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I really appreciate it. I can see where dip and go would be a more realistic method for me. And also how sunlight would be infinitely preferable to indoor lighting. I'll have to figure out a workable solution. I don't fancy sitting outside when it's 104 degrees and letting the mosquitoes devour me alive. But that's less preferable than screwing up a bunch of stones. Hmmmmm......
also, for some reason I thought a Dremel and a Flextool were basically the same, but I googled and whew....based on the price difference they are vastly different. Any suggestions on what time of Flextool I should keep an eye out for? What else can I use it for?

There's some really good material there. To counter the nerves, grade the rocks, fight (hard) the urge to start with a pretty one that motivates you, but pick up some duller / not so good pieces then start by learning your lessons with that. Learning your lessons with the stunners is more painful. Not even a consideration! I've already got some of the lesser quality/flash ones picked out to start on as I don't want my learning curve to potentially waste money. I'll be picking out the very best ones and putting them away until we feel adequate to the task.

I'll share that info with Manthing and get back with you. It looks like a pretty solid piece of equipment. What grits should we start out with? Does this work best with preformed pieces or will it work with scrap odds/ends that are left over after cutting?

We have been talking about getting a tumbler, but as neither of us have ever done it before we have no idea where to start.
Looks like we need to take a look at vibrating tumblers now. 90% of what we dink around with is either jasper or agate, so this could definitely move things along much quicker.

Sabre52 , wow those are gorgeous. Am I understanding this correctly, you just shaped them then tossed them in a tumbler? Is that a thing? That's genius! I especially like that 2nd to last one.
